I don't think you could afford a used iMac Pro if you only have $3000. Get one of the new iMacs and spend whatever money you have left buying compatible third party RAM. The regular iMacs have a port on the back of the machine that you open to access the RAM slots. This is a rare feature for the most recent crop of Apple computers (it's not on the iMac Pro.) I weighed my options when purchasing my machine and ultimately decided to get the new iMac with the best video card and SSD options available. And I spent another $700 buying 64gb of third party RAM to install. That same RAM is now $330 for 64gb.

> Should I buy a 16gb computer, or buy my own RAM and install it myself. Is it hard to install ram.?

Do not upgrade the RAM at Apple! It is incredibly easy (and usually much less expensive) to upgrade the RAM yourself. The RAM must match the following specification:

PC4-19200 2400 MHz DDR4, 260-pin

This RAM should work, for example:

The iMac 27" 2017 supports up to 64 GB RAM (4 x 16 GB RAM modules). Based on its specs, it comes with 2 x 4 GB RAM modules - that means in order to upgrade it to 16 GB RAM, you'll need another 2 x 4 GB RAM modules or a single 8 GB RAM module of the aforementioned type.

16 GB RAM should be enough for your purposes, though.

This video shows the RAM upgrade procedure (again, trivially easy):

    > This has a Radeon Pro 570 graphics card. Is there much difference between this and 575 model.

Yes, there is quite a difference. Here are the numbers the respective GPUs achieve, very informative article regarding the different GPUs:

    > I'm looking for a high performing machine, that will continues to preform well for 5 years.

In this case I recommend to buy a model which contains an SSD, instead of a Fusion Drive like the one in your link. Fusion Drives are just ordinary HDDs with a small (32 GB SSD in this case) SSD portion. This SSD contains the OS and some / most of your programs. Once that SSD portion is full of files, you'll have to resort to the HDD portion of the drive. That means far slower loading times, and a higher probability of failure (HDDs are more error-prone than SSDs). Therefore, get a model with a small SSD at least. Should the storage space on that internal SSD not suffice, you can always use external SSDs with the iMac. A small internal SSD with another external SSD is still a better solution than having to put up with a Fusion Drive, believe me.

You can theoretically remove the internal HDD and replace it with an SSD yourself. However, this procedure (in contrast to the easy RAM upgrade) is incredibly hard. It requires you to disassemble the device, including unglueing the screen from the device body. Have a look:

Because the procedure is so difficult, it is a good idea to buy an SSD model to begin with.

Otherwise the machine should be fine.

Yeah that's what you'd go for. https://www.amazon.com/d/Computer-Memory/CORSAIR-CMSX32GX4M2A2400C16-Vengeance-260-Pin-Notebook/B01G26166W

When you upgrade you should definitely send your current one to me 🤣

I just bought this and it's so fast and good for 4K editing.
Def boost i7 to 4.1GHz
Buy the least amount of RAM, take it out, sell it, and install 32GB of this

As per Dell Specs R3 supports 2666 mhz and not over that.

I went ahead and bough , 32GB,2400 mhz Corsiar Vengeance for $145

Review confirms that it runs with A13 R3.

Is your 16gb ECC or not? I bought 16gb x2 Corsair (non-ECC) and I get that message that says:

>Memory configuration that is not compatible with this model is detected. We recommend that you refer to the specifications in the hardware installation guide or on the official website to correct the following memory configuration.

  1. Inserted incompatible memory modules

Per this post, it sounds like anything that isn't the right size gets an error message regardless of whether there's an actual issue with RAM or not.
