As ArthurRemington noted, the system as originally sold was configured to use the 16GB M.2 SATA SSD as a cache to offset the slow 1TB 5400RPM HDD using either Lenovo's [ExpressCache] (http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds104444)† software or Intel's Smart Response Technology software. If you did not install one of those after setting up the system then that the reason the computer is slow. It is loading everything off the hard disk drive and not taking advantage of the cache drive at all.

From looking at the ThinkPad Yoga 460 FRU-BOM, the ThinkPad Yoga 460 is only offered with a M.2 2242 SSD, which means SATA and not NVMe as LocalHostRulez noted. Since M.2 2242 SSDs use single- or dual-chip NAND flash memory solutions, they are going to be slower than SSDs which use physically larger boards, like M.2 2280, because those contain morec hips across which the reads and writes can be spread. For this reason, I'd recommend against going with a 128GB M.2 2242 SSD, which are probably going to operate in the lower-300-400 MB/s speed range and instead go with a 256GB part, which should get you into the 400-500 MB/s speed range. Transcend also has a 512GB model, but you are paying a premium. ZTC had a 512GB model as well, but I didn't see a listing for it on Amazon. If you can find one at a decent price, though, you might want to consider that.

Any good quality 2.5" SATA SSD (Samsung, Intel, etc.) would be even faster, though. However, that would mean giving up the 2.5" 1TB HDD.

When you're ready to perform the upgrade, download the Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 460 Hardware Maintenance Manual, which explains how to disassemble and reassemble the unit. I also found a YouTube video here of someone doing the same thing.

In the meantime, probably the best thing you can do to increase performance is to wipe both the SSD and HDD drives inside the ThinkPad Yoga 460 and reload the Windows 10 operating system using the Lenovo factory recovery media, which you should be able to download from the Lenovo Digital Download Recovery Service. Check to verify eligibility before you erase the drives, though. You will need a 16GB USB flash drive to create the recovery media.

With the recovery media, you will be able to get the system back to the way it was running when it first arrived. Ever since the SuperFish incident, Lenovo pretty much gave up on installing any third-party software on their systems (aka bloatware). You can read the announcement from their company here about that. By the way, it was never installed on any ThinkPads, just their consumer offerings. Lenovo still does load some non-Microsoft software, but it's for things which aren't natively-supported by the operating system (For example, if you bought a Lenovo computer with an Intel RealSense 3-D camera, it would have the Intel RealSense 3-D software on it, since Microsoft doesn't provide that software as part of Windows 10.), maybe a trial version of anti-malware software. You'll also see a couple of pre-loaded programs like Lenovo Settings (for managing the computer's hardware) and Lenovo Companion (for customer support), but those are Windows Apps from Lenovo, and can be easily removed. Oh, and maybe some Lenovo wallpaper. Traditionally, ThinkPads have not had much in the way of bloatware, anyways, since they are sold to enterprises for corporate use.

In the words of the Immortal Bard‡, you kind of played yourself by loading a vanilla version of the operating system instead of sticking with the factory pre-load, which was relatively bloat-free (maybe just uninstalling any third-party security program if you wanted to use Windows Defender).

Even if you do not plan on reinstalling the Lenovo pre-load of Windows 10 to the existing 16GB SSD + 1TB HDD, I would strongly suggest making the recovery media. That way when your replacement M.2 2242 SSD arrives, you can use that to perform a clean install of the factory pre-load, and get any Lenovo drivers or software needed for the machine to operate at full potential.

I just made the exact move you did...moving from a MacBook Pro mid-2012 to a T440s. I added an M.2 SSD into the WWAN slot and replaced the screen with the N140HCE-EN1 by Innolux (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075DD2356/). I didn't mind the 1600x900 screen honestly, but had the replacement ordered before actually receiving the machine, based primarily on the reviews of the dim and low-resolution of the 1600x900 display. The swap was simple and took about 10 minutes. The new display is 1080p, super bright, and has great color, and best of all was a simple drop-in replacement. As for the track pad, I haven't done anything with mine yet and may not. Gestures and multi-touch work great on the existing track pad and coming from the Mac (I've been using Macs for over 32 years) I'm used to a buttonless track pad and I really don't mind it.

For what it's worth, I am getting 11+ hours of battery life on this unit. I'm very pleased with this decision and find the T440s to be everything I need in a portable computer.

Yes, Samsung 850 Evo's are great SSD's to use with a T430. You can have up to three drives in your T430 if you get an optical bay caddy (mSATA, main slot and optical). Nimitz is a good brand for caddies which can be bought off Amazon:

Yea those are the 9 cell batteries that stick out and they work pretty well if you use them as a grip point.


That depends on what your usage looks like. I'm almost always using a wired connection but the Intel 6205 is pretty good and the 6300 is a little quicker going by its specifications. One time I forgot to swap back to wired and was playing The Division over WiFi with a 6205 for a good twenty minutes before I realized it so its definitely a capable little card.

If you want to eek out more battery run-time a helpful program to look into would be Throttle Stop. Also Core Temp if you want something to monitor your CPU's heat levels that can also be customized to put your system to sleep if temps get too high (lets your system cool off).

No one seemed to answer this for you so I'll try my best. This modding guide has a lot of the best parts this laptop can use including battery! Although I'd be aware of receiving a fake battery on Amazon or eBay. On Amazon, it shows $60, but if you type the serial number it should be on the Lenovo website for more money. You'll have to decide what the best option for you!

That's the normal 970 evo, the 970 evo plus is a bit better though. 970 pro isn't worth it to me from a price point perspective the 970 plus is my go-toand is what I have installed on my X1E. 3500mb/s read and about 3200-3300 mb/s write, the one you listed hovers around 500mb/s read and a bit less write than that.

Everything you listed as a requirement can be done on all Linux distros, what you have to determine is how you'd like to manage them. If you're a first time user I'd recommend pop os and manjaro, they're sure to have all the stuff you need and work pretty good out of the box. I personally use manjaro because it's a rolling release so I install once and just go upgrading stuff as it comes out, no need to install a new one over what I have once the new release is out like other distros. Just remember that with Linux you'll have to do some digging around and getting your hands dirty with stuff sometimes for things to work properly but once you get used to it you'll see it's a small price to pay for all the flexibility you get. The ones I listed are just some personal favourites, you really can't go wrong with any other to be honest just experiment with a few until you find the right fit for you, try them on some virtual machines if you want to make your testing a bit faster.

Just got it a few days ago and unfortunately doesn't charge the X1C Gen 5. Pretty disappointing since they advertise 20V 1.5A!

Edit: It charges the laptop but only when it's off. Doesn't charge when it's sleeping either.

However, for the T490, in benefit of having USB-C charging port, you could utilize an external battery pack to charge up the laptop on the go.

There are an assortment of battery packs out there with high capacity and high output to be able to charge the T490 multiple times over. As well as if needed, can charge during use. While the battery packs may not be able to create net-positive charging, it will extend the laptop usage time at least twice over. Especially if you arent utilizing the dedicated graphics.

  In my opinion, I prefer to have a sleek and slim laptop, with the OPTION to have extended battery life with a battery pack. Lenovo did have the neat design to have an internal battery, and a swappable battery slot so you could swap on the fly, but that required that you had to charge each battery IN the laptop seperately for each battery you have. Here, you can charge it outside, and use if for multiple different devices when needed! A win win in my books!

It's a pretty similar model. The disassembly is the hard part, you've got to take the palm rest and keyboard off. Be gentle with them, there is a ribbon cable connecting them, and if you rip it you are screwed. Both of the ribbon connections just pop off, with a quick pull right on the connector.

I suggest Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut for your paste. If you are going through the trouble of taking your laptop apart, you might as well get the best stuff available. It seems like this is always at the top of the heap for the non-conductive thermal pastes, and if you are only buying one tube, then the price difference is ~5$, which is pretty insignificant in my opinion.

I upgraded to the fastest dual core in this generation and noticed a slight difference. If you are going to spend the money to upgrade the processor, just go get yourself one of the hotter quad cores to make it worth your time. Of course if you do this, pick up the dGPU heat sink and fan, as they are rated for 45W as opposed to 35w. With that heat sink I've seen people get 80c on the hottest quad cores in the generation.

This looks like I would get a powerful machine for a very reasonable price. From reading online, it looks like the upgrades would fit in a gen 1, any idea if it would work in a gen 2 too?

As others have said, up the ram to 8-16 gb. Another thing I would think about doing is replace the battery. Often times refurbed batteries are terrible. I wouldn't reccomend third party batteries, as I have found the cells inside them are bad. I also added a bay battery from ebay, but that's just personal preference.

In linux, install tlp, thinkfan, and the install the thinkpad kernel module. That software basically optimizes linux for the thinkpad. You will get much better battery life with all of that. Also, thinkfan will let you set the fan curve, and provides a better option for fan control on thinkpads compared to what is in linux out of the box.

Everything else should work just fine in Linux. Please note that 160 gb might not be big enough for both linux and windows. Linux will be fine with low storage, but windows is 20 gbs by itself. In addition, adobe CC is probably another 10 gb or so. Keep that in mind.

The mod is pretty easy. You can't mount the OPOLAR cooler without cutting out the little ridge that is basically just there for aesthetic purposes since the battery has the same ridges. I just kept going a little farther to get the fan some extra air flow. I'm considering cutting it out a little more to see if it improves the Temps at all. However it's not really necessary as the Temps are fine & the plastic does obviously provide protection to the fan.

I did a piss poor job cutting it. You should be able to do much better with the proper Dremel tool. I used a metal grinding attachment that wasn't at all great for cutting plastic. But heh, work with what you got right?

This the configuration that I purchased (still waiting on shipping - Oct 15). My out the door price was $2,357 (with military discount & eCoupon). My usage also includes ML agents with Tensorflow, Visual Studio 2017/2019, Unity, Blender 2.8, virtual machines (need a MAC OSX VM for uploading to Apple's app store), Docker, and various other software.

I understand the need for a decent CPU. I decided to get the 6 core 9850h because of the RTX5000. I chose not to go for the Xeon because ECC memory isn't necessary for the projects I work on in my off time. The price different between the Xeon and the 9850h is quite large, and the performance gap is quite small (outside of ECC).


The OLED screen is supposed to have 100% DCI-P3 coverage, 100% SRGB coverage, and 100% AdobeRGB coverage (though some reviews have shown the numbers to be slightly lower, but with delta E for less than 2 all around).


I personally believe it is a better value proposition to get the 16GB (8GB + 8GB) configuration with the 512GB storage, then upgrade from another vendor such as Amazon or Newegg. 32GB kits (16GB + 16GB) are currently going for around $130 Amazon Link. A 1TB Samsung NVMe SSD goes for around $170 Amazon link

Lastly if you are fine with repasting the CPU & GPU it might lead to better thermal results. I haven't seen anything on the P53 yet, but I did find this for the previous model the P52 Youtube Link. While temps didn't really improve a lot, the CPU was running at a higher clock speed.

The specific battery I bought doesn't fit your model, but fwiw, I bought this battery from Amazon a month ago which was much cheaper than directly from Lenovo and I have had zero issues with it. Based on all the packaging and the internal battery stats, it appears to be legit. I've been using it for at least a few hours on battery every day and the capacity is currently at 99.9038% which seems reasonable to me for one month's use.

That way the total cost stays within the sub-$2000CAD range which is definitely a lot less daunting wallet-wise. Can't quite justify a $3000 (or potentially even a $2700) laptop to myself yet unfortunately!

One last question: is the P2000 + i7-8850H card worth the $300 jump from the P1000 i7-8750H card?(and as a curious follow-up: is the T1000 card + i7-9750H worth the $500 jump from the P2000?) I'm assuming this is a case-to-case thing (and more expensive is generally better), but I'm having a hard time imagining the cost-benefit ratio, and any thoughts would be much appreciated!

That's an awesome list of ThinkPads you have! I see your an X series guy. I thought about pulling the trigger on a decked out X230 but it doesn't have the classic IBM keyboard. Since you have the best of both worlds, which keyboard do you prefer from the X220/X230?

Also, do you think this RAM would work on the X220? Did you have to flash a certain BIOs* for the 16GB RAM or was it plug n play?

Note: The i7 X220's come with a USB3 port which may be important to you. The i5 model does not. If I had to do it all over, I would get the i7 model.

STORAGE

Your laptop will likely come with only one drive in the SATA slot, where Windows will be installed.

Your laptop also has a mSATA slot that is probably empty.

Your operating system can live on either drive. The SATA slot is faster than the mSATA slot I am pretty sure, if that matters to you.


In my configuration, I left Windows on the SATA hdd, and installed a mSATA drive to house Linux. I use this laptop infrequently, and for light work so I did not want to spend much on drives. I am happy with the performance.

As a PS user, you should have best practises in organizing your drives.

  As to memory, your laptop "unofficially" supports 2x8GB modules. I would wait to see how PS and LR run in the ram it comes with, before buying more ram, but I think 8GB would be the minimum acceptable in your use case. Search /r/thinkpad for ram suggestions, as I've never upgraded my 2x4GB modules.
  
  The only other upgrade I can think of is buying an IPS panel to replace your TN panel, if that is what you get. I have the TN, which is tolerable in my use case.
  
  I hope this starts you thinking about your new toy.

I got a genuine Synaptics trackpad from Amazon, at considerable expense (compared to other options), that was absolutely horrible. 25% of the time it wouldn't enumerate. When it did work, the quality of the tracking would drift over time. Sometimes it was OK, at others it would have too much inertia and overshoot my intended target. It would also have poor precision. I had to move away from a target and re-approach it, because I could not make small movements.

In terms of ram you're probably alright if you stick to a good name brand such as kingston or G skill. Just make sure it's 260pin SODIMM when your order it.

I don't have a lot of experience with docking stations, as I have a powerful tower that sits at home. But I know lenovo has a dock that has a nvidia 1050 inside to help performance with 4k screens or multiple monitors. It runs by tb3 x4 and has 2 display ports and an hdmi port. I am in the minority, but the E460 is a great budget laptop. The E440 was cheap, but the E450 and E460 have been very solid improvements. It is 3 screws to take the bottom cover off and 0 more to replace the ram and hard drive. The hard drive just pops in.

It's not really difficult. It's just kind of a long process, and all the screws make it a bit annoying. Rough steps:

1. Remove battery and power supply.
   
2. Remove keyboard.
   
   1. push up keyboard by the two bottom "slits" on the keyboard.
      
   2. after screws are exposed, remove them. I think they stay on the keyboard, though, but unscrewed.
      
   3. Pull the keyboard up a bit from the bottom, then pull towards you (or in the direction of the trackpad).
      
   4. flip the keyboard (or hold it vertically) and disconnect the two keyboard ribbons. (Note: all ribbons have some sort of lock that you either pull up, or pull back (pull back for the fingerprint scanner). It's black.
      
   5. Put the keyboard somewhere safe.
      
   6. Disconnect the trackpad ribbon. It's the small one below the keyboard ribbons.
      
3. Remove bottom cover.
   
4. Remove like 13 screws. I think they're the ones labeled "C"
   
5. Remove the palm rest. It's held in by "snaps" (idk what to call them), like the display bezel. Some guitar picks might help here. (Note: If you have the fingerprint scanner, it's ribbon is glued to the laptop, so be careful when pulling the palm rest up in that section because it's shorter. Not extremely short but not long enough to work with. You can unglue it slowly and it becomes easier to disconnect.)
   
6. With the palmrest now off, and since you disconnected the trackpad ribbon already, just flip over the palm rest and remove the screws for the trackpad.
   
7. Swap the trackpad.
   
8. Basically do everything backwards to put it back together.
   
   I ended up with the trackpad in and the thinkpad halway back together while trying to get the drivers to work because I didn't do a lot of research for the process to get the drivers to work. I think some steps have to be done while the clickpad is still connected (disabling automatic trackpad driver installation and such), but I'm not entirely sure. As soon as it worked for me, I just put it back together.

The X1C or X1Y is basically designed for you, to be honest. Get the screen upgrade. Have you looked at the X1 Yoga with the OLED screen? The OLED is amazing especially re photography, and the pen can be useful for drawing stuff given your situation.

The X1C and T470S don't get that hot in general, although if you're running artificial benchmark tests, yes it will heat throttle. In other words, it will be fine for you except when you export from Lightroom.

Don't pay Geek Squad. You'll be paying money just for someone to unscrew a few screws and insert a card into a slot, and another into another, then rescrew the screws.

Your T460 will have two RAM slots. Buy your 8GB stick, insert it with the 4GB, and you will have 12GB. Ignore people on /r/buildapc; you're not building a PC and they've somewhat confused or misled you. In this case you will have read about dual channel RAM, but it's negligible for your cases compared to the benefits of more RAM and/or upgradeability later (so I'm saying you should prefer one 8GB stick over 4+4 to enable upgrading later more easily, which outweighs dual-channel benefits that you won't notice). Plus, with 8+4, the matching 4GB of each can be in dual channel mode anyway.

1. I don't remember the exact specifics, but I found 16GB Corsair Vengeance RAM on Amazon for cheaper than the Crucial set. I'll update with a link if I find it again (found it). It had black and gold packaging and worked beautifully. For the SSD, I'd recommend mSATA to start. Yes, you're limited to SATA2 throughput, but you won't notice in everyday use and it leaves you the option to put a larger drive in the 2.5" slot later.

I believe the T460 uses DDR3L RAM
However, single 16GB DDR3L SODIMM sticks are few and far between - Crucial don't do any, for example.
So if you do find one , chances are you'll pay over the odds for it

Sometimes, you can use DDR3 - but a) this depends on the manufacturer as to whether they support it, b) not sure you'd want to (or even able to) mix DDR3 & DD3L

And even then - a single stick of DDR3 16GB is £165 (GBP)
In contrast, a single stick of 16GB of DDR4 is about £60

the T460 has two slots, right? You'd be better off buying a 2x8gb DDR3L pack - about £60

For the SSD, it's a no-brainer. You're far better off buying your own. Even with the BLACKFRIDAY10 coupon, the slot 1 upgrade is $319, the slot 2 addition is $527; a 970 EVO 1TB is $228, and you are guaranteed the best consumer-grade SSD on the market right now instead of playing the lottery.

For RAM, though, it's not as simple.

16 GB x2 of PC4-21300 SODIMM is $254.

The 32 GB x1 and 16 GB x2 upgrades are both $223 with the coupon.

The cheapest, however, is the 16 GB x1 upgrade at $74.41 with the coupon, plus another 16 GB x1 at $125, for a total of around $200.

Of course, if you get the 8 GB and replace it, 8 GB is worth around $60 new. However, I've never thought of the used RAM market as very strong, so I think you'd be lucky to get $20-30 right now. Alternatively, you could keep it for later.

I'm not sure how this works with Perks instead of the current coupon because I'm lazy, but "get the cheapest and just buy your own upgrades" is not always the least expensive route.

My model came with the smart card reader, and no integrated mobile broadband. Following the hardware maintenance manual I was pleased to see how straightforward it was to remove the bottom cover and do the changes (disabled the internal battery before doing anything though). Afterwards I installed Fedora 21 on the M.2 drive and configured the 2.5 SSD as my home drive. Needed to disable secure boot and also change the UEFI setting to legacy (otherwise Fedora would get stuck while booting). As reported by lots of people trackpoint buttons do not work properly, but fixes for that are already in the kernel so they should work eventually.

I'm pretty sure this is compatible with the t450s. I was eyeing it for a while until I found out I was barely using 2.5 GB out of 4 GB with linux.

upgrading the screen on the w540 is easier than the t430, the bezel just pulls straight off. Just dont do what I did and try to put 4k screen in cos I did that and fried my motherboard!

It worked well and was the best of the software that I used (I cloned 3 times before getting things working).

The gotcha is that after cloning the drive you must remove it before booting back to Windows 8.1 (and probably Windows 8). If you don't do this Windows gets confused.

The ideal would be to daisy chain thunderbolt displays, but that'll get pricey.

Your best bet is to get an eGPU and run them off of that. You only get one display port per Thunderbolt port (USB-C might or might not have it depending on the specs), so you're limited by what that can output.

USB alone probably won't cut it for 3 displays, but I might be wrong and it might cope at 1080.

From what I've heard, the memory controller in the T430s only supports up to 8GB per module (i.e. 16 GB total in the T430s since there are only 2 SODIMM slots) and in order to get support for 16GB modules, you have to upgrade to at least a Broadwell-generation model (2 generations newer).

I'm not sure what RAM speeds the T430s supports, but when I upgraded to 16GB, I got this (1600MHz):

Depending on what kind of condition your machine is in, you probably should just fix the LCD. Because you have the i7 version, buying another x220 with ~$150 would only be a downgrade to an i5. You can buy a new IPS panel for about $45 on amazon, and if you're going to get an msata, you should consider a mydigitalssd 128gb drive, which I bought for $60. The msata port runs on sata 2, so it doesn't matter to buy high bandwidth msata ssd's like the Samsung evo 840, because you won't actually get that speed. My x220 boots windows 8 in about 2-4 seconds.

Most posts/forums I've seen recommend this Crucial model. The same model you have in your guide. I'll know if it works once I do the upgrade. Beware though that if you put 12GB RAM in the laptop, you'll only get dual channel capability on the first 8GB and the remaining 4GB will be single channel since that capability only is possible in pairs of the same capacity.
