You deposit the check, your account balance goes up. You pay out the money. The check comes back fake. Your account balance goes down. You're out the money.
It's not so much that the check gets cancelled, but due to various laws the banks have to make the money available to you in a certain time frame, but the check won't necessarily be returned as invalid in that time frame.
If the check was merely cancelled it would be an awful scam, because that means the check was real and you can find out who the person at the other end actually is. But the check is fake, and so it becomes much harder to track down the scammer.

Cold hard cash. If they're sending personal movers for the item, tell the buyer to send them the check and exchange the computer for cash when they come to pick it up. They will immediately back out. Because there are no movers. Nobody will show up for the computer.
