I only skimmed, but to add, anime in Japan makes most of it's profit from horribly overpriced DVDs/BRs and merchandise for a niche market, while in the west they were attempting to sell at "normal" prices.

eg: bluray box set in japan = $400+, usually $500+ or more. Here is one example for over $1,000 USD! And it's only one boxset of two!

bluray box set here = $50, even the limited editions never go above $100-200.
