> 2: Our system, when sending an initial offer to Amazon for a SKU, sends MSRP (retail price - that high price that nobody pays online!). In addition to MSRP, we add in a fixed amount for estimated shipping cost and we have a minimum of 10% markup to cover Amazon's 8% commission on memory. Then, once our listing is active, oour software will gradually reprice it downward to be competitive with other sellers..

So you're telling me that the OEM of the RAM sells below their own MSRP (in essence, undercutting their partners)? Crucial sells the same stick for $30.

That stick of RAM, in its entire existence, has never been at the price you listed: http://camelcamelcamel.com/Crucial-Single-PC4-17000-SODIMM-260-Pin/product/B015HQ9TGW?context=browse

If you haven't bought it already here is 4 GB of ram and 8GB of RAM and thanks in advance for buying through the link.

You should be okay with this.

Computer science students will have to deal with code development and applications like android studio require at least an (i7 U/HQ or i5 HQ) dual/quad core processor with atleast 8/16gigs of ram memory and a low end dedicated graphics with ssd.

XPS 15 is an excellent choice but keep in mind that 13.3 inch is better for portability. However, XPS 15 has been constantly rated the best 15 inch laptop available today and i would tend to agree but for some minor software quirks.

I would suggest you get Dell XPS 15 i5-6300HQ version and upgrade the ram to 16gb by sticking in an 8gb ram like THIS one

I also suggest you to buy an M.2 nvme ssd by samsung for about 100$ like THIS one and clean install windows 10 on it. The installation is pretty simple and there are several guides on the internet plus you'll get an much better system

TOTAL COST :- 1249$ laptop+45$ RAM+100$ SSD ~ 1395$
Within your budget will get you a killer laptop

If you want as small as possible without taking up much desk space you'll either be looking at all-in-ones or mini pcs that can attach to the vesa mount on the back of a monitor. Mini pcs often come barebones meaning they do not have ram or a harddrive.

Here is an i3 nuc that has wireless, Bluetooth, etc i3 nuc

That costs about £250. A ddr4 8gb sodimm stick of ram and 250gb m.2 ssd can be had for less than £150. ram and drive

You should be able to get monitors with a vesa mount on the back fairly cheap, around £100 (like this one ) and a wireless keyboard and mouse for less than £40 (like these )

All told that would be £540 or so for hardware, give or take a little bit. It would get you machines that would do well at office tasks without taking up any desk space. With the wireless keyboards and mice the only required wires would be for power, Ethernet, and a short cable to connect to the monitor.

I would caution that you may be limited moving the license for Windows license. You may need to buy another copy of Windows for each machine but it looks like an oem disk of 10 pro is only £45 on Amazon uk.

I did some more research, and it could be a memory compatibility problem after all. Amazon review text:

> My first NUC6i5SYH build used this memory module without a problem :). My second and third, however, have been plagued with "Hardware memory issues" as reported by the Linux OS that runs on top of them. With this in mind, i cracked open all the boxes to find that one of these things was not like the other. The good build had a part number of CT16G4SFD8213.16FA1, while the bad builds had a part number of CT16G4SFD8213.M16FB. Clearly the NUC does not play well with the latter.

One of the "critical reviews" here

But that review was from May 10th of last year, so you'd have hoped the BIOS updates would have resolved it since then. EDIT: the NUC6i5syh is being mentioned in positive reviews as well, but it's tough to tell exactly which model number those people are using; it could be that the M16FB model uses a different voltage or something.

To answer your other questions:

3) I thankfully didn't have to change the NUC power settings for my Linux machine, but I know that's something that was suggested to others on the official Intel NUC forum, which I see you've posted on last night! Good call, some of the people there are really helpful.

4) Yeah I realize it's a weird solution, but it feels like I have to force it to "wake up" and become responsive to log in sometimes. That's why I was thinking maybe it's a hardware power-save mode getting in the way of the OS and preventing the keyboard/mouse interrupts from being received.

I doubt this last piece will offer any help to you, but I did have a major freezing problem on the NUC when using dual monitors. I had to upgrade the Linux kernel to get it fixed, but that seems like an entirely different issue than yours.

The last thing I'm thinking might be worth trying: if the freezing happens very reliably after a certain amount of time, try running the machine without VMWare/Virtualbox running at all (if possible). If it still freezes, at least we know it's not some weird virtualization or resource allocation problem with those VMs. But if the freezing isn't consistent, this might be a pain in the ass to test.

Good luck man. I rather like my NUC, and I hope you can find a way to make yours work.

Sorry, I had cross posted, didn't know the text doesn't transfer.

>I'm currently using this notebook which uses an 8GB Samsung stick and I want to upgrade to 16GB.
My current choices are Crucial and Kingston.

>From what I've read it's recommended to get the same capacity and frequency which is what I did when I considered these choices and I wanted to confirm if was compatible or not and see if you guys had any recommendations as well.

I don't know about max settings, but the recommended graphics card for Civ 5 is an nvidia 9800 series, which is about 50% weaker than Intel HD Graphics 520.

It used to be the case that you couldn't run anything good with integrated intel graphics, but that's not really the case anymore. I've seen Thinkpad 13 play games like Overwatch and Bioshock Infinite (not on highest settings though).

I'd buy the 4gb version with the 6200u, then throw this in the other memory slot. You could even go up to 32 gb of ram if you really wanted to.
