I understand, laptop shopping can be ridiculous difficult if you don't understand components. That's alright, that's what we're here for!

I'd recommend the Acer Swift 3, its a bit below budget but should be able to get the job done. It has:

  • i5-8250U 4-core processor

  • 8 GB of RAM

  • 256 GB SSD storage

  • 1080p 14" display

  • MX150 2 GB graphics card

  • Weight of 3.8lbs and battery life up to 10 hours

The laptop runs Windows 10 Home. I'm not sure if you'll necessarily need 16 GB of RAM, and if so that would be kind of hard to achieve in your range. But the components in this laptop should be fine for creating a Linux-based OS.

If you are okay with something a bit heavier, the Dell G5 which is a tad bit over budget will surpass your target for specifications.

Sorry, should have made it clear it’s the one mentioned in the April sticky post. Let me see if I can grab the link on mobile.

Your options are limited since you to game and want good battery life. You can look at the Dell G5587-7866BLK-PUS as a good alternative to both the Dell Inspiron 15 7567 or the Lenovo Legion y530

· 15.6" LED Display 57% sRGB

· 8th Gen Intel i7 Processor,

· 16GB Memory,

· 128GB SSD+1TB HDD,

· NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti,

This laptop provides good balance as a gaming or a productivity laptop while being able to be called a ‘student’ laptop that can game. It has a battery life of over 5 hours which is not easy to get in a laptop with this much power. Its OS comes on the SSD which means boot times will be fast and whatever programs you put on it will be sped up a bit and you have lots of space on the HDD for bulky files, music photos vids etc. Build wise its displace is stable so you can open it with one had and its case is firm with little flex but it is made of plastic. You can add more RAM, upgrade the keyboard and easily clean its components if you are into that sort of thing. If you plan to do professional grade photo editing you might want to hook up to an external monitor because is color accuracy is on the low side of the scale with only 36% sRGB coverage. While the GTX 1050 Ti GPU is weaker than the GTX 1060 that would be ideal at this price point it is properly cooled so you should not have any throttling issues

Unfortunately the Acer Helios 300 was on sale for $1000 just yesterday afternoon, but has gone back up ("Cyber Monday") to just under $1,200.

Not sure what the tax would be like to import, but it's still a great deal. It does run a little hot, so I hear, though.

For about $60 cheaper, you can get the Dell G5587. 1050 Ti vs. 1060, half the SSD space but 1 TB HDD (You can add more space to the Helios as well), same RAM, and you lose the 144 Hz refresh rate.

The Helios is ~2.5kg to the Dell's ~2.85kg as well. Not a huge difference either way, but the Helios is lighter. If you're looking for ~$1,000 after import fees, you're gonna be hard-pressed to find a laptop with your specifications. Just the 1050Ti 'spec' alone ends up being over $1000 on most anything I found.

Actually the Dell Inspiron i7577 might match most of what you want. Great cooling system, only $900, GTX 1060 GC, 128 SSD (I believe this is easily upgradeable), 1TB HDD, and i5 processor. Only 8 GB RAM (again, pretty sure it's easily upgradeable) and it's not the i7 you wanted, but otherwise a really good deal as well. I nearly purchased this one. Same weight as the other Dell.

I would go with this Dell G5

Battery life is the only killer for you since you can order in the US. The Dell G5587-7866BLK-PUS would be a good laptop to get

· 15.6" LED Display 57% sRGB

· 8th Gen Intel i7 Processor,

· 16GB Memory,

· 128GB SSD+1TB HDD,

· NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti,

Get a gaming laptop since you mentioned that weight isn't a very big factor. They have the H series higher watt processors with higher clock speeds which deliver way better CPU performance which is what you need. The i7 H version actually has 2 more cores and 4 extra threads for a total of 6C/12T. This is something that will definitely make a lot of difference when doing creative work. Notebooks with their 15W chips simply can't come close to these higher wattage components.

I'd look into the Acer Predator Helios 300. Beast of a machine for $1000

15.6" FHD IPS w/ 144Hz Refresh, Intel i7-8750H, GTX 1060 6GB, 16GB DDR4, 256GB NVMe SSD

If the above laptop looks too funny for your liking then get the Dell G5 i7 config which looks a lot less flashy than the Black/Red Acer mentioned above. It has a lesser powerful 1050Ti but with your requirements I don't see that as a problem. Also it costs $80 less.

Performance wise they're both top notch so it really boils down to your preference and design/aesthetics.

Also in the specs of Acer Predator they haven't mentioned any hard drive so I guess you'll need to install one on your own if you are serious about any sort of gaming/content creation.

So yeah, just go with the Dell G5. Hard to go wrong with it considering your requirements.

It's insane to think how far laptops have come. Had someone told me that you'll get performance better than 7700K with a 970 for $1000 I would have never believed it, but well.. here we are. :)

I'm overtired, I apologize. Laptop broke and I really need a new laptop. For slight gaming, programming, and Netflix. Would this be worth the extra $100? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CD3MRZF/ref=as_li_ss_tl?&linkCode=ll1&tag=listlap-20&linkId=d482a98b39c3b5cb2562de8ba0dc92d9&language=en_US#customerReviews

OP: the laptop you linked will be more than good enough to run WoT. However, when buying a laptop that's not in the budget section, you should always look for screen quality (max brightness, colour) and hard drive.

Now, the screen on this MSI checks out: it's a decently built full HD screen. You can't expect higher resolutions or >144 Hz screens in that price range, but full HD is a good resolution for a 1050Ti.

The only issue I have is that it's got a 1TB regular hard drive, no SSD. I'm a big advocate of an SSD in any machine.

I see this machine which has a 128gb SSD + 1TB HDD for 70 bucks extra. Dell usually has good machines (decent screen too), this one is no exception.

From the list i would go for the XPS 15 obviously

Outside the list i would get a Huawei Matebook x

i5 or i7

since you are not gaming the i5 would be fine

https://www.amazon.com/Huawei-MateBook-Signature-Laptop-i5-8250U/dp/B07CTHN94Z?th=1

The dell g5 is also a great option for $900

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-G5587-7866BLK-PUS-Display-Processor-Licorice/dp/B07CD3MRZF/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=dell+g5&qid=1556670601&s=gateway&sr=8-3

however you can get the g7 with the gtx 1060 for 100 dollars more

or the Razer Blade 15 if you can spend 100 bucks more than the xps 15

it has a premium design and also has a gtx 1060

The xps 13 does throttle unfortunately, but the xps 15 is pretty good about it, along with having my favorite keyboard and screen on the market.

I’ve been primarily dealing with dell support most of my career and it can be a bit iffy but at the same time, every single one is on the consumer side. Especially the Asian ones like asus (bad experience)

In the end it comes down to what you like the best, and if you have to type on the keyboard you hate every day, you won’t want to so I’d recommend the Mac 13.

On the lines of other computers, I have a strong hatred for gaming computers but I’ve heard they’re getting better recently if you can deal with sub-par battery life. I hate to be that guy but I’ve had good experience with the dell g5, and it’s cheap with better battery life, and doesn’t look too “over the top”

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-G5587-7866BLK-PUS-Display-Processor-Licorice/dp/B07CD3MRZF/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=sl1&tag=laptopunderbudget-20&linkId=31d0f701aa9ab6e6ff1cd99a3991c81f&language=en_US

Think pads are also great but the keyboard is something to get used to. In the end you should spend a few hours in a beat but or some store using the different computers you’re looking at buying to know which one you want.

My one recommendation is to stay away from asus computers. They are cheaply made and the customer support sucks dick
