Yes, MoCA allows you to send ethernet signals through coax. For ~90% of people it's pretty much plug it in and it works (assuming the coaxial cables actually all connected together through the locations you're interested).

----------------
If the TVs use regular cable, MOCA adapters work. DECA for DIRECTV and HIC for DISH.

One warning, regular moca adapters can be pricey (though they're basically full speed).

DECA is dirt cheap but only supports up to 100mbps.

As far as "get a new router" most people on here will suggest wireless access points like the TP-Link EAP225. They ONLY do wifi but they do it well. They also support PoE (power over ethernet) so you don't need to worry about getting a power cable to it if you are able to run ethernet (read: easier to get it in a good, central location)

If you have coax cable in the house, you can use cable to ethernet adapters. The only caveat is that you can't also use the jacks for cable TV at the same time. There are a more expensive type of converter that will work simultaneously with cable TV, but I've never used them.

If you're not using the coax for anything else and it is disconnected from the outside world: Use DirecTV's' DECA adapters as a stop-gap. A pair of them are ~$15.

This isn't as speedy as the MOCA adapters listed elsewhere in these threads, but the price is impossible to beat. Reliability is fine; I've been using a trio of them for six months and have shoved many terabytes through them. They behave themselves consistently.

It's the same protocol, and probably mostly the same hardware, as MOCA. It's just in a different frequency band.

Downsides: Slower than gigabit (100Mbps), but probably still faster than Wifi (if it worked where you needed it to begin with). Unlike MOCA, it will not cohabitate on a coax network that has any manner of TV services running on it (but it will coexist with DirecTV if that's your bag). No support (but none needed).

And then get a wire (or two: It's barely more-expensive to have two or three runs instead of just one), because it's just better that way.

Switch? You mean it allows coax to be used for Ethernet, right?

Not a bad way to go. If you can live with 100mb rather than 1 gbig these are about 8x less expensive and do the same thing. You need two per coax wire you want to use for Ethernet (one at each end).

Do you have coax in your house? If so you might try DECA adapters. Super fast and cheap.

In something like 90% of cases it'll just work.

I'd generally suggest these units: https://www.amazon.com/goCoax-Adapter-2-5Gbps-Ethernet-WF-803M/dp/B07XYDG7WN/

MoCA 2.5 is "the future" of MoCA and these are pretty much the only units you can get (and they're cheaper than the 2.1 adapters)

The DIRECTV (works with DTV or when there's nothing running on the line) DECA adapters are AWESOME for the price. The can only do 100Mbps but if your use case isn't bandwidth heavy it's consistent wrt performance.

I tried powerline adapters but they didn't work well. They were pretty quick but the signal wasn't stable enough. I ended up using DECA ethernet to coax adapters on both my TiVo and TiVo Mini and they're working well.

a token ring adapter? What are you looking to do specifically?

If you're looking to run ethernet over coaxial you'll need a pair of MoCa adapters, or slower DirecTV variant DECA adapters.

Here's 200Mb DECA for $23

100Mb DECA for $16

670Mb MoCa adapter pair for $125

or if you have 2 cable runs, 1400 Mb bonded MoCa for $150

Right - I have cable internet, but not TV service. I just bought three of these ($10 each - or here's two for $15) - plugged one between my router and the coax port in the wall, another at my computer, and another at my TV/HTPC. I can stream shows and Steam games perfectly from my computer in my den to my TV two rooms away.

Buy this. Or call and request one, mine has been flawless since.

Do you have DSL and no cable TV? If so, you can use DirecTV's version of MoCA adapters which are significantly cheaper than actual MoCA adapters, but they WILL interfere with any cable TV / cable modem signals on your coax. https://www.amazon.com/DIRECTV-Broadband-DECA-Ethernet-Adapter/dp/B00ZDUQVFU
