I've tried a few and settled on Goodyear and Craftsman black rubber hoses, but you should also look at Eley if cost is not a significant factor.
Cheap ones as you say are useless and disposable.
I tried a heavy Swan commercial grade one. It was annoyingly stiff and heavy and kinked hard. It was moderately difficult to kink, but once kinked it stayed permanently kinked. It has one of those impressive sounding, but useless warranties. It has a 10 year warranty, but to claim on it you need not only the receipt but also the packaging the hose came in. I don't know what sort of hoarder you'd need to be to have tucked away last year's garden hose packing.
The black rubber ones are not as hard to kink, but when they do kink you can just shake the kink out and it is not ruined at that spot. They are also not that expensive. Maybe $30 for 50'
I've also got an Eley that I'm very happy with. It's more expensive than the rubber ones, and probably even better. They are $50 for 50' and you will probably have to pay shipping as I don't see them in my local stores. Their hose reels are awesome too.

I've got 600' or 1000' of hose at a time and sometimes leave them where people will drive over them so decent and not too expensive is the right option for me. If you only need one hose for yard use and put it away when you are finished with it Eley might be a better option for you.
On a related note look at Dramm quick disconnects

Pricey, but I have beat the crap out of them for 3 years. Zero leaks. Always work as expected.
