Hu /u/gh0stingRS - you can mount your mother's 28-135mm EF lens on the GH3 with a [$30 DSLRKIT Canon EF to micro 4/3 adapter w manual aperture control] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007KG4QKC/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B007KG4QKC&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) [Referral Link] until you decide what kind of glass you ultimately want to buy.

And the GH3's battery life is the least important of its advantages.

Hi /u/captainmomo - I started out with a Canon T2i and switched to a Panasonic GH2, then a GH3 and now I have the GH4 on pre-order.

Here's why the either the [~$1000 GH3] (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?icep_ff3=2&pub=5575034783&toolid=10001&campid=5337235943&customid=&icep_item=191094671040&ipn=psmain&icep_vectorid=229466&kwid=902099&mtid=824&kw=lg) or the [~$1700 GH4] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I9GYG8O/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00I9GYG8O&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) would be a better choice for video than the [$1100 70D] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DMS0GTC/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00DMS0GTC&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) [Referral Links]:

  • Both the GH3 and the GH4 have a headphone jack - the 70D doesn't. This is a big deal. Not knowing what your camera is recording to your soundtrack can be a problem.

  • the GH3 records at a maximum HD frame rate of 1080/60p, the GH4 records at up to 1080/96p. The 70D records at a maximum frame rate of 1080/30p. This can be a problem if you want smooth slow motion.

  • the GH4 has a built-in intervalometer for time lapse. You have to buy an external intervalometer or modify the firmware with Magic Lantern to shoot timelapse with the 70D.

  • the GH3/GH4 can record continuously for more than 30 minutes, while the 70D has a hard 30 minute continuous recording limit. If you set the 70D up in the back of a theater, house of worship, auditorium or concert hall to record a play, sermon, or other event, you have to restart the camera every 30 minutes. You don't have to worry about that with the GH3 or the GH4.

  • The GH3/GH4 have an electronic viewfinder (EVF) that keeps working when you're shooting video. The 70D, like all DSLRs, has a mirror that blocks the viewfinder when you switch to video (or "Live View") mode. This forces you to use the LCD for composition and critical focus. This is fine indoors, but outdoors in bright sunlight, the LCD can become unusable. This can be problematic. Many DSLR shooters get around this by buying an LCD loupe or an external EVF. This adds unnecessary extra cost.

  • For not a lot more than the 70D, the GH4 records in 4K, with 4 times the resolution of 1080p. Not a lot of people have 4K monitors or TVs (yet), but 4K has advantages besides stunning resolution (as seen [here] (http://youtu.be/ho0uvSYhYCI), [here] (http://youtu.be/hHKJ5eE7I1k) and [here] (http://youtu.be/Us7LLO9iI1g)).

You can also crop it to produce 1080p almost anywhere in the frame. So you can produce a "multi-camera shoot" with just one camera(!)

Here is an example, shot with one camera in one take - YouTube has compressed it, but you get the idea:

    http://youtu.be/irrICbNcz38

All of that said, the bottom line is image quality. Canon DSLRS (except the $3000 5D Mark III), have a problem with a phenomenon called moire - shimmering colors and lines on patterned objects like rooftops, brickwork and patterned clothing.

Here is a moire comparison if the Canon 60D side-by-side with the Panasonic GH2:

    http://vimeo.com/20565849

The 70D has the same problem with moire:

    http://vimeo.com/73429088

I will go back to Canon when they lift the 30 minute limit, take the mirror out (which is useless for video) and deal with the moire problem. Sony has done all three with the A7s, now it's Canon's turn.

Until then, I strongly recommend the GH and Blackmagic cameras for large sensor, interchangeable lens shooters on a <$2000 camera budget.

With a [$1698 Panasonic GH4] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I9GYG8O/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00I9GYG8O&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) (which should start shipping at the end of this month) and a [$32 DSLRKIT Canon EF to Micro 4/3 adapter with built-in aperture ring] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007KG4QKC/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B007KG4QKC&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) [Referral Links], you can continue using your existing Canon lenses with your new camera for an inexpensive entré to the world of 4K video.

    Hope this is helpful!

As others have recommended, you should get the [$599 Metabones Canon EF to micro 4/3 Speed Booster] (http://www.adorama.com/MBSPEFM43BM1.html?KBID=66297) for the extra f stop and reduced crop.

If you can't afford that, the next best choice is the [$399 Metabones Canon EF to micro 4/3 Adapter] (http://www.adorama.com/MBEFM43BM4.html?KBID=66297) with iris control.

If that still exceeds your budget, you can get a [$31 DSLRKIT Canon EF to micro 4/3 adapter with manual aperture control] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007KG4QKC/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B007KG4QKC&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20)

Congratulations on the transition to the GH - I did the same thing a couple of years ago and it was the best camera decision I've ever made.

Good luck!
