If you really are interested there is a follow up book about it. I believe the books are still considered cannon. It has mixed reviews on Amazon but its a decent read, not the best Trek novel but certainly not the worst.

A good double-read would be the novels "Relics", the novelization of the actual episode, and "Dyson Sphere", a follow-up to the episode.

Though Dyson Sphere is speculative, I found it an interesting story, and (if you'll take it as a possibility) it answers a good number of your questions.
