For stripping the inner usb cables, I recommend this tool.

Also highly recommend a helping hand tool; you can use that to hold the usb terminals or GX16-4 which makes soldering way easier.

Some things that have helped me.

There's a tool called a Knipex that works well for me for clipping the ends:

And then this thing is solid for bending the wires at 90 deg angles:

I like to cut a few reference wires for common lengths and keep them handy to measure out new wire against.

If you really kink up a wire, just replace it.
