Just a few minutes passed since you posted this comment and GTX780 price has already dropped by a hundred bucks . Cheap 4K monitor is a bit over $300. They will be cheaper than my lunch by the next week :)

According to this list you could run a 4K display on GTX 650 and that one costs just $100.

So yea, 4K gaming isn't even that expensive.

Not to be confused with Gtx Titan graphics cards. Just a PSA for those not in the know.


Gtx titans are not for gaming, they do deliver exceptional gaming performance but it's a marginal performance increase from the top cards in Nvidia's 700 series.


A gtx titan retails around 1000 USD and typically benchmarks <10% (in games) above the gtx 780 sc which retails around 500 USD.

For $2,000, you can score a pretty excellent VR dev rig.

If you're already using UE4, and you've got got your DK1, you're probably relatively familiar with the basic demands— The faster your CPU, the faster everything compiles, and more ability you have to get things done simultaneously outside your IDE. RAM is a similar story, as well letting you play with more polys and textures in whatever modeling program you use. For the GPU, various Oculus people have dropped the hint that you pretty much want a GTX 770 as a baseline for advanced apps [source]. That's consistent with what benchmarks have had to say about what it'll take to drive the (probably) 1440p CV1.

With regards to the OS, there are very few reasons to use Windows 7. You can read some reddit discussions about that here or here, but the moral of the story is that everything works better on 8 except maybe the layout, which you can change.

$2,000 is a good spot— it's pretty much where the bang-for-buck curve becomes a cliff. Here's about how that build looks:

This leaves you with wiggle-room, to make a couple decisions based on your uses and preferences. You could bump one of the monitors up to 27" 1440p, you could bump the very capable GTX 780 up to a 780 Ti, you could move up to 32GB of RAM, increase the size of the SSD, or just pocket the change. It really depends on what apps you're trying to produce, and what your workflow looks like— if it were me, I'd lean towards the 1440p screen, just for workflow reasons.

My Mobo also did some overclocking on top of that from the bois. My cards now 10% faster than a Titan.

It is $80 over budget but I definitely suggest going with more than a 770 if you are trying to drive 3 monitors at nice settings. Also, you would have to be comfortable buying used from the warehouse.

Hi, sorry to be late to the thread, but I just recently made this upgrade.

and so far, it thrashes games at 1440p. The only game I've had issues with so far has been Watch_Dogs, but that game barely works on any setup. I absolutely recommend it.

Yeah, the bulk of the money is going for that fast 8 core CPU. You said that you wanted to use this for gaming, that's the reason for a FAST CPU. Most games out there today are still single thread so if you don't have a fast CPU it would affect game play. You could easily buy a slower 8 core CPU for your number crunching tasks and save a ton of money. You need to be concerned about the number of cores a CPU has and not necessarily the speed of the CPU. I think that after the new consoles launch, this aspect of game play will change anyway. Both the Xbox One and the PS4 will have 8 core processors so it only seems logical that most games from here on out will be multi-threaded.

You could also downsize the GPU to a GTX 780. The GTX 780 is just a cut down Titan. You would see a performance hit and it would be determined by exactly how your software uses hardware acceleration. The GTX 780 has 2,304 CUDA cores and 3GB of VRAM, the Titan has 2,688 CUDA cores and 6GB of VRAM. If your software is using CUDA cores the performance hit wouldn't be too bad but if it was using VRAM it would be by half. (It wouldn't be half as fast it would just be significantly slower because you have half as much VRAM.) I would strongly suggest that you not buy a GPU below the GTX 780. The GTX 770s, 660Tis and 660s have different architecture that will not perform nearly as well.

Making those changes would still leave you with a very fast computer but will save you $1070 to bring your costs down to $3811. Hey, that's under your budget!

If you decide to move forward with this build I would suggest going to the Supermicro website and downloading the motherboard manual. Read all about what happens when you run one CPU on this motherboard. (Some of the PCI-E slots are turned off.) Make sure that all the components you buy are compatible with this motherboard. The one i already had - EVGA GTX 780 SC. Although it wouldn't have mattered since they said it was either coupon or PM, but not both.

I have these 780s which are non-reference. I'll have to wait till Tuesday before the thermal paste comes in. I'll reapply the paste on one of my GPUs and put the stock heatsink on one of them, and if it works, then I'm just gonna assume that my cards don't like the G10.

and I overclocked it using evga precision x (http://store.steampowered.com/app/268850/). I bought mine for ~600 3 years ago and I'm gonna use it for vr and hold out until pascal comes out later this year.

CPU & GPU are the most important when it comes to games/streaming.

When you open a game, windows allocates it a fixed percentage of the RAM and it doesn't move much, as long as you're not at 80% memory usage while streaming you should be fine.

Some games are heavier on CPU than GPU, H1z1 being one of them. An i7 is obviously one of the best chips out there and will easily handle 720p/60fps broadcasting, a better graphics card will allow higher graphics settings while maintaining the frame-rate.
I'd say a minimum of 8GB of RAM, also a 960 OC is a great entry-level card however I'd recommend going for a 780 which matches your CPU performance better.

I'm looking to upgrade my monitor. I have an EVGA GTX 780 SC. My main question is does this card support G-sync? I see the gtx 780 on the list of cards that do support g-sync, does that mean ALL 780s? I purchased my card on Amazon in early July 2013, and there is no reference to G-sync on the box, like there was on my girlfriends gtx 970. I just wanted to make sure that Nvidia didn't start releasing G-sync versions after I bought my card.

Additionally, will this card even run a 1440p g-sync monitor very well by itself? just planning on a single monitor with games like Rome 2, Elder Scrolls Online, and soon GTAV.

If anyone has any suggestions on a 27 inch monitor that could run well with my card, I'd appreciate some help choosing a monitor as well.

I have a LG 34UM95 ordered. While ordering it is one thing and finally receiving it is another. I'm looking to upgrade my 760 to something beefier for 1440p+ gaming.
