My niece has a kid's digital camera similar to this one, she loves it. Fisher Price makes one too.
They're built pretty tough, with simpler options than most digital cameras. If your son is a little older, then a cheap "adult" point-and-shoot might do the trick too. If you're not too worried about resolution or quality, you can get a camera dirt cheap.
The cool part is they get the fun of taking and seeing their photos, instead of pretending to take photos.
