FitBit Zip is basically a fancy pedometer, but it uses a free app to help you track your goals. My goal is 10,000 steps a day which translates out to about 4 miles a day. At first I couldn't hit that mark by a LONG shot. Now, I usually average about 12-15k. It really helped me by showing me how truly sedintary my daily life was (I have a typical office desk job) and how much effort I actually needed to exert each day in order to start making progress. Not to mention, it would just bug me if at the end of the day if I was at 8800 steps. I'd think "Nope, not going to bed until I hit it!" I still wear mine every single day and nobody can tell.
I saw you respond to someone else about your husband not being super onboard with the healthy eating train just yet. My guy wasn't either when I first started. But I flat told him, "you eat what I cook, or you cook your own food." Healthy food doesn't have to be lacking in flavor or variety. www.skinnytaste.com is the best thing that ever happened to my eating habits. The food is delicious and definitely "man approved". And frankly, he doesn't really even have to know what's in it. If it tastes good, I doubt he'll even really care. In fact, I've gotten so accustomed to pretty much only cooking good low-cal food that its almost a game to me to trick people. I'm from the south and when it comes to special occasions, my mother thinks that if it isn't deep fried in crisco it isn't good. But I hosted Christmas this year and made everything low cal and nobody knew the difference, swear to god!
I will tell you that the best early investment I made was buying a good, digital food scale. Portion control is key. If a recipe says 4oz of protein, I weigh it out to as close to 4oz as I can get it. If a serving of crackers, chips, whatever says 1oz, I measure out 1oz. It REALLY puts things into perspective that way.
I really mean it, if I can help you in any way at all, please please please let me know. I know first hand how daunting of a task losing a serious amount of weight is and it helps so much to have a support system.
Does anyone have the Fit bit zip
I've been toying with the idea for awhile now...and the reviews are almost all stellar. I'm thinking about it, but I'd like to see what fellow RAOAers think about it
Fitbit.xip is a clip on.

The item that has helped me a lot in my weight loss journey has been the fitbit. It has really helped me learn when and how active I really am. Also another great thing that I swear by is a food scale. These are the things that have helped me get and stay at my goal weight for over 2 years.
[Fitbit Zip] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0095PZHZE) is probably gonna be the way to go.
Fitbit has the best app ecosystem, syncs via Bluetooth to your phone, website has easy to read information. It's a good device.
EDIT: if you're staunchly anti-fitbit, the cheapest way to go is buy a pedometer and log it daily to a spreadsheet (Google docs, excel, take your pick).
But I really think you'd like the fitbit.
I exaggerated/maybe they don't make the one I was thinking of. This one is the cheapest currently I believe.

Fitbit Zip might be worth the extra $15 to you. I've seen it go as low as $40 before, and with black friday just around the corner you might be able to get it for $35 or less as they are the low end of the Fitbit brand.
Battery lasts for several months, clips on to your clothes, and syncs all your steps to your phone or computer - allowing you to easily track more than just one day or one workout.
