Broke my back in 4 places, January 2009.

Now the proud owner of a full spinal fusion (T1 all the way down to L4/5), and no discs below the cervical spine, as well as a C5-C7 fusion, shattered pelvis, and some other stuff that is minor in comparison.

Doctors told me that the chances of my walking again were slim at best, and that if I did manage it, I'd have to rely on a walker or a cane for support.

I spent ~18 months in a wheelchair.

Then I spent ~3 months using a walker.

Now, some days I need a forearm crutch or a cane, and some days I don't.

But at least I'm walking again.

Now here's the bad news.

I have permanent nerve damage to most of my lower body. I have feeling in specific areas of each leg, but both legs are ~95% numb. This can make walking tricky at best, especially if I get in a rush. I sometimes lose track of where my feet are in relation to the rest of my body, which means I stumble or fall down once or twice a week. Competing in IDPA, my times have gone way up, since I just can't move as fast as I used to.

"Waste removal" is pretty tricky with the nerve damage. I no longer have an issue urinating or voiding my bowels, but I get exactly zero notice when it's that time. By the time I feel the urge to go, I need to be within a minute of a restroom. Otherwise, there's issues (Yes, I'm an almost-40-year-old man, and in the last 3 years I've lost count of how many times I've shit my pants. It's sad, but true.).

Another byproduct of the nerve damage is that my dick doesn't work. Oh, it'll get hard, but only when it wants to. I'm extraordinarily self conscious about this, and as a result, haven't even tried dating or getting laid since I got hurt.

I had to buy a tall bed, comes up to just past my waist. This way, I can literally roll to a standing position to get up in the morning.

Now for the best part.

The chronic, never-ending pain. I hurt all the time. Literally. If I'm awake, I'm in pain. Some days are better than others, but it's always there. I don't use any narcotics for pain management, not because I fear becoming dependent upon them, but because they constipate me terribly. So I take a lot of ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, and once or twice a week I'll get a nice beer buzz. But that's it.

But I'm alive. And I can walk (for the most part). And I can get out of bed every morning (some days it takes me an hour to do, but I always manage). And I'm not stuck in a goddamn wheelchair for the rest of my life.

TL;DR: Broke my back in several places, was confined to a wheelchair for over a year, my dick doesn't work right so I'm afraid to try and get laid, and I occasionally shit or piss myself, but at least I can walk upright again.
