All of these except the Thumb run off of lithium coin cells. Some lights are much easier to swap in fresh batteries than others. The Ares's beam is too tightly focused for a headlamp and the batteries are difficult to change. After swapping in a floody LED, it is my favorite.
I've also used my $24 Thrunite T10 on a hat brim, but it is almost too heavy for that use. Personally I would get a Thrunite Ti3 if I wanted a dedicated hat light.
The main skill is not bringing a bunch of stuff. You can spend $10 on a titanium spoon or you can just bring a $0.05 disposable spoon. Backpacking meals? Just make your own with ramen and tuna packages. Cooking system? Cat can stove and a Foster's beer can will set you back $10. Better yet, just bring stuff you don't have to cook and save on weight and money. Water bottles? Get a Gatorade bottle. Flashlight? $12 and you are packing lighter than any headlamp on the market. First aid kit? Make your own in a ziplock.
I did some thru-hiking on the PCT and trust me, all the stuff that the experts are bringing isn't the crap they are trying to pawn off on you at REI. These guys are trying to get down to sub 10 lb base weights and that means bringing less. You pack your fears, and REI is great for finding new things to be afraid about.
All the clothes you'll need to wear will basically be wool or synthetic. They tend to last for ages, so you can find fleece or nylon shells in the thrift store. Any running shoe that breathes well and dries out quickly works for backpacking. If you want to buy one, get Brooks Cascadia's.
In short, about 90% of the bullshit people bring backpacking is completely unnecessary. Food, warmth, weather protection. If the weather forecast is clear and you are close enough to walk out if it gets ugly, you don't need the tent.
There are tons of directions online about making your own gear and repurposing other items.
How about a keychain style light like the Photon: http://www.amazon.com/LRI-FMW-Freedom-Keychain-Micro-Light/dp/B0007D5TKQ
I have this, I love it. Not a big fan of pen lights, they end up falling out of my pocket, getting borrowed indefinitely, etc. I work nights, I like that I can just press the button when it's hanging around my neck and I have a light for mixing meds and stuff without having to turn on the overhead and waking up the patient.

Might be too small for your preference but I carry photon freedom and it works perfect for my edc.

I don't personally carry backup lights, but I do own a few I've considered carrying.
Small, cheap, reliable - just jam in your ditty bag and go.

I do carry backup batteries. I take the risk if the LED's burn out - I'll be blind (I actually get pretty good night vision). I don't night hike regularly and I can manage without a light in most all situations if necessary.
Photon Freedom on a stainless steel ball chain necklace. I wear it 24/7 and use it several times a day.

I've been rockin' the Photon Freedom on my keychain for a couple years now (semi-permanently attached – clips are a no-go for me) and love it. I'll admit, though, I went through a couple batteries in the beginning whilst training myself not to fidget with it. Since then, battery changes have been pretty rare and always with plenty of warning.
Photon Keychain Flashlight. I can't count how many times I've used it since I bought it. I'm on year 3 and the battery is holding up just fine.
This isn't really a gadget, but I also keep a Spyderco Ladybug on my keychain. Like the flashlight I can't count how many times this has come in handy.
