I am also a Texas Mason... and I found that my mother lodge rushed through all of that mostly because none of the master's of the lodge had any actual understanding of the symbols or their meaning.

They sure knew what to say, but for most of them, masonry was just a place to hang out with some guys and have some beers after.

It was not until I started my Rosicrucian training that the symbols of masonry had any actual meaning.

I left my mother lodge to join a lodge that really focused on the esoteric meaning of the esoteric work.

I highly recommend Freemasonry and Ritual Work: The Misraim Service by Rudolf Steiner and The Temple Legend : Freemasonry and Related Occult Movements by Rudolf Steiner if you want a real understanding of the meaning behind everything contained in the lectures and degrees.

The rule is for every step forward you make in occult knowledge you need to improve your morals and ethics by 2 steps. Occult knowledge is dangerous when you are not prepared.

Occult knowledge has also been corrupted over the years and in my opinion there does not exist a "secret society" that you can join that gets the spiritual facts straight. Not a one!

With all that said here is a source that gets closer to the truth than any of your suggestions.

...is the information I give to everyone who is interested in occult knowledge (occult simply means hidden but has been portrayed/linked as a word denoting Satanism or evil). These are easy to understand and explains the basics quite well. If you read these letures you will be ahead of 90% of the people who claim to have "occult" knowledge.

This is mystery wisdom brought to you by Rudolf Steiner. There are a few others that can compare to him (J. Krishnamurti for one) but Steiner really laid it all down as best as he could in hundreds of lectures and his 5 main books (available for FREE on that website). If you inist on Freemasonry Steiner updated their rituals in this set of lectures...Freemasonry and Ritual Work: the Misraim Service (https://www.amazon.ca/Freemasonry-Ritual-Work-Misraim-Service/dp/0880106123)

You will have a real hard time understanding that book if you don't know the basics either.

I personally think the OTO has always been a bastardized version of mystery wisdom, almost black magic. I think Kabbalah is extremely interesting but is way too old to help us in and serious ways in the modern world. The thing about anthroposophy is that it claims to be more up to date...meaning appropriate for the western man in the modern world...as opposed to say Yoga which is more appropriate for eastern folks and is not as up to date with the spiritual changes that have taken place in man and society since it's beginnings in India a long time ago.
