Around summertime I recall reading about docks like [these] (https://www.amazon.com/Fyoung-Type-C-Adapter-Nintendo-Converter/dp/B074RGQ261/ref=sr_1_6?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1511521106&sr=1-6&keywords=nintendo+switch+dock) including a disclaimer that warned that it could brick the console if the cables were not connected/disconnected in a precise order.
Here is another claim from a reddit user regarding a different model.
If the Nyko one is potentially dangerous...I'm highly skeptical to put trust in other ones right now.
On amazon you can find USB-C adapters (which you can also use as a "travel" dock) you plug it into your Switch and it gives you a regular USB, USB-C, and HDMI ports. This is the one I use and it works great.
Edit: Additionally you can just buy a stand for the Switch on amazon for like $5 that holds up the Switch so you can have something plugged into it while you play.
Just an FYI some third party docks may not play the video properly. I have a Fyong USB-C to HDMI Portable Dock (link below) which overall works fantastic but for some reason with Hulu either the sound won't work or both sound and video won't work but the timeline and video options will still be present. All issues are fixed once I go into portable or use the standard dock.

This is a huge size difference from the dock. I don't bring the little sliding bits, but they don't really take up much space anyways

There are versions of this without the ventilation holes if you're into that.
Though be warned you will have to take apart a Nintendo dock for this.

Which is a standalone dock that can also output to tv mode with a battery pack, or any power source. (Though you will only get tv mode with charging during gameplay with an ac adapter like the one you get with the OG dock; otherwise you will drain battery slowly while playing and charge while not, or just drain slowly but constantly if you use a shitty USB wall charger)
The other alternative is the nyko dock, but the two things I mentioned covers everything that it does anyway.
