Not training for a long course race, but I just got a fenix 5s sapphire (non-plus). I didn't feel like I needed any of the new features in the plus version. I was able to snag it for $441 on amazon (link below). Note that the top says sapphire glass but the drop down says regular glass, but I can confirm that I received a sapphire Fenix 5s sapphire. So you can save quite a bit over the plus if you don't need the new music, payments, etc. I feel like the fenix looks good enough to wear 24/7 including daily to the office, but can't comment on the forerunner series.
