Also looks interesting, better screen layout, weeks of battery life, built in GPS etc etc

BUT.

Dont underestimate the fitbit app. I've looked at lots of apps and always come back to fitbit. I have a polar 370 which works really well but the app just isn't as open and immediate to see how you're doing as the fitbit app.

But more so the age of fitbit and it's market dominance means people have built a lot of add on products that are somewhat complimentary.

Fitbit and my fitness pal links into a lot of other apps really nicely with the sync solver app bridging the gap to Apple Health such as:

Happy scale (which I love for forward projection on weigh trends and way points on the way to goals)

HRV apps such as welltory, elite hrv, ithlete or hrv4training. I currently use welltory as a quick check and hrv4training as a daily check on progress. Welltory is fine in the free version but I did pay for a year initially as I'm a heart bypass patient and wanted to keep a very close eye on heart stress as I upped my exercise intensity.

Fitline is another free app that gives you summaries of all the fitbit data ie total lifetime steps etc and Bit stats does the same on a daily or weekly basis against other users.

And lastly tactio health links to a lot of other data from Apple health linked apps like my blood pressure app (bp companion) and blood sugar app (contour) to give a very solid summary of the state of my body when cross referenced with the aria scale data.

I think in terms of casual usage it makes no difference what you use to track exercise stats - any number accurate or wildly inaccurate doesn't matter as really all you want is an idea of what you need to do to do more.

I'm a film and tv editor by trade and I work well with data and have only been using fitbit since July but even in that short time have gone through a huge fitness boost and gone from a 40 inch waist (bad) to a 34 inch waist (good) and down from 91 kg to 79.8 kg. And at the end of the day those are the stats that count not steps or stairs climbed.

Im still looking at Garmin and samsung as well as Apple watch solutions but for now I'm very happy with my charge 2. Friends who have apple watches love them for exercise tracking but hate the battery life and sleep tracking. Both Garmin and Samsung have nicer display layouts and color screens but all pale compared to the Apple watch. However the price points vary quite a lot.

To summarize to me it's all about the phone app. Fitbit has this down and combined with my fitness pal and the other exercise apps I use such as fitbit coach, Nike run club etc form a closed data loop that's going to be very hard to displace at any price.

Growing up poor, I saw first-hand the pain of trying to lose weight with less money. Between the Herbalife-style products being marketed to you by that one aunt, to the infomercials with the weird exercise equipment that doesn't work and cost your $60 savings on your birthday, to knowing the $40/mo for a gym would be impossible on your budget, to not walking outside because that's how your one friend got mugged, it felt like you tried a million things to lose weight.

Now that I'm doing financially better, I'm testing out cheap fitness bands and programs along with CICO (and a food scale) to see what poor people would be more likely to try, since I have that experience from my past.

What they need first:

  • Food scale ($20 for bare minimum scale in a dept store)

  • Showing them where/how to get decent to good running shoes, by showing them seasonal sales. (FILA shoes in my area run $20-25/avg). Keeping it simple, since everyone knows how to walk.

  • MyFitnessPal for calories ($0, I pick this one for a reason)

Then they need some apps or gadgety things to make them feel like they bought something to get ahead. Or the free equivalents. I'm going by android apps since I don't know any poor people who could afford any sort of iPhone.

    Google Fit app ($0)

    Pros:

  • Free.

  • Quick download - No wait like you would have buying a fitness tracker online.

  • Tracks steps in the background, no need to open up to track.

  • Syncs with MFP to give calories (Add app, then set as Step tracking source)

  • Auto-tracking can pick up bouts of running, biking, and walking, with maps.

  • Shows you what percent of people you were more active than in your area. (You were 99% more active than people in LA last week, with 123,000 step count)

    Cons:

  • Your auto-tracked path won't show up until 30 mins later, Google Fit needs time to "think" about your GPS path.

  • Calorie timing shows to your timezone in your timeline, but calories seem to be pushed based on Google HQ time (PST). So if you are east coast, you get your 9pm-midnight calories put into the next day.

Xiaomi Band 1s ($22.99, can be found cheaper on Gearbest if you can wait)

    Pros:

  • Heart rate and step counter for dirt cheap

  • Shows step progress to your goal if you lift your hand up.

  • Has SMS, phone, app, etc alerts available to buzz at you to check your phone.

  • Has a wake-up alarm.

  • Can make some feel like they "moved up" since they now have a fitness tracker "like everyone else."

    Cons:

  • No screen display, just 3 LED lights

  • Overcounts a bit. Lower your exercise calorie consumption to 30-50% rather than 50-75% because of this

  • App display is simpler than Fitbit's.

  • Heart rate is on demand. You can get a $2.49 app called Mi-Band Tools that can let you set heart rate, specific vibration app alerts, and even a smart alarm. It works with all Mi Bands.

    Wokamon($0)

    Pros:

  • Tamagotchi-type game where steps give you XP to raise alien critters.

  • Syncs with Fitbit.

  • Syncs with Google Fit (and through that, Mi Bands)

  • Free

    Cons:

  • No online discussion community, so you'll have to figure out the little parts of the game yourself.

I'll test one more one day, which is the Xiaomi Band 2. Looks like it'd be a good "cheap" Fitbit Charge HR replacement with an actual screen on it. I didn't pick it first since its non-sale price is around $40, and that's a huge amount for the super-poor. Might be good for someone starting around black Friday when it goes down below $25, though.

Its taken me so many months to research and try all this but it was worth it. Now I have a back-up plan if times ever get tough again. And I can show others that don't have much cash how to lose weight and get active without a gym membership. :)
u/gat7305 · 1 pointr/running

I have a Fenix 5. Expensive, but mainly got it for appearance, not extra features.

Basic features are used the most... HR monitoring during the day, GPS data during runs... A chest strap during all my runs. I think most watches will give you that.

I do like the VO2 Max calcs (it's nice to get an indication of progress even if it fluctuates). Those exist on most watches. Lactate threshold data is interesting but I don't know how trustworthy it is. You have to start spending some money to get lactate threshold data. The recovery adviser and all that stuff is also interesting. It's a little nice to have a watch that gives you ideas on how you are doing. Is it gospel, no, absolutely not (hot weather runs will make you seem out of shape). It's all interesting.

Honestly, you have some budget, I'd get whatever watch fits that budget best and not worry about the features. There's always more features out there but honestly the basic ones are really the most useful.

For a bargain, I'd look at the refurbished Garmin Forerunner 235 for $200 or so on Amazon.

u/tactile23 · 2 pointsr/GoPlus

Ordered two different bands from Amazon, let you know in a day or two :) I'll update later. Both claim to be Mi 1 compatible and good for the Go-tcha.

Finally got my band from Amazon. Got a real cheap one, so if it wasn't good I wouldn't have wasted much. Here's the one I got, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0154AVS9C/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Yes, it's cheap looking, but no worse than the band that comes with the Go-tcha. The Go-tcha fits in well. It's kinda wierd. Either it sits fully in the space provided, but there's a slight flap of the plastic which covers part of the face of the Go-tcha, or you can push the Go-tcha out of the housing a bit and have that same flappy bit of the band wrap around the middle of the Go-tcha. The latter makes the Go-tcha stand very proud of the band and it'll be easy to scratch. I like it partially covered, it protects the face a little and you can position it so that you can still see what it's doing and press the red dot. Up to now I had been walking around with the Go-tcha in my pocket, but that's not ideal, you can inadvertently turn off some of the auto-capture functions when you are picking it out of your pocket if you touch the screen too long. I've worn the band on two hunting trips now, and it fits well and is comfy. I'm happy with it. There are lots of similar bands on Amazon, some are going to be shipped to you from China, so watch the delivery times. But I'd say you may be fine ordering many of them.

I also got a second cheap one from China, this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CY3Q9RI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. It was $4.50 with free shipping. It's pretty much exactly like the standard Go-tcha band, but comes in different colours and fits the Go-tcha to a T. The Go-tcha stands out, above the band face, just like it does on the normal band. So it's more exposed than the band above. I like the one above, so that may be the one I use more, gives a little more protection to the cheap face of the Go-tcha. I don't normally wear a watch, so I can bang that thing if I wear it on my wrist.

u/ChiefAllDay · 1 pointr/TheSilphRoad

The distance tracking is fantastic on the watch. If you own a Nintendo Switch, and wear your Apple Watch, it will count the movements with the controller as steps, gaining you egg distance. Two hours of playing Arms on the Switch hatched every single egg I had in incubators, to include some 10Ks.

Separately, the Apple Watch really pairs well with Apple Maps. It will make a ding noise and vibrate once in concert with apple maps when you need to make a turn. I love this feature!

With regards to the iPhone 6, it will play Pokemon Go just fine, but I would recommend a used iPhone 6s simply to get the better processor and force touch.

To be honest, I would get a better phone and a [Pokemon Gotcha] (https://www.amazon.com/DATEL-Pokémon-Wristband-iPhone-Android/dp/B06Y5BTX8L) for now. You can have it set up to auto spin poke stops, and / or auto catch Pokemon. Once you see how well it works you'll use it a lot more than your watch for distance.
And then save up for a nice Apple Watch a little later. (buy nice looking Apple Watch bands from amazon priced at 6-7 bucks rather than from Apple for way too much!)

G'luck!

We have a winner....

count.it
They check of all our boxes and I believe this is the best option for what our small bus wants to do for the price. Similar products are much more expensive. They offer a variety of challenges too i.e. leaderboard, company to company, team. We can also add multiple admins so nobody is stuck doing all the work.

$$$:
1 month = $4/ea. (16 peeps = $64)M
3 months = $3/ea. per mo. (16 peeps = $144)
6 months = $2/ea. per mo. (16 peeps = $192)
Pros:
Affordable.
Great reviews.
Supports private leaderboard challenges – not open/community based
Synchs w/both Android & iPhones
Synchs w/multiple tracker devices (FitBit, AppleHealth, Strava, Garmin, Missfit, etc)
Free/Affordable
Cons: nothing so far… we connected easily, and they’ve been very responsive with my questions. Still need to test out the group feature with actual people and challenges. We’re kicking that off next week.

Does everyone have a tracker?
Is it fair to have a few people tracking with only their phones? If you want to offer low-cost pedometers as a substitute for those who don’t have one. These devices are available on Amazon for very affordable prices. The misfit synchs to count.it and they start at $19.99 at https://www.amazon.com/Pyle-Bluetooth-Activity-Fitness-Tracker/dp/B07PNRJP1N/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=Misfit%2Bflash&qid=1568927947&s=gateway&sr=8-6&th=1

This one was also pretty awesome. Probably a better option if this were something that we’d want to do year round.

MoveSpring - https://movespring.com/pricing/events?users=10#compare-programs
$$$:
One Time Challenge = $15/ea. (16 peeps = $240) for max 45 days
Unlimited = $110/mo. Paid annually
Pros: In addition to meeting all of our requirements, they also offer a variety of group challenges.
Cons: More expensive option

Just in case you wanted to see some of the other options that were considered...

inKin
$$$: $3.50/ea. per mo. (16 peeps = $56)
Pros: Looks cool and offers everything we need at an affordable rate. Links w/Apple Health so an additional tracker isn’t required.
Cons: Customer reviews show that there tends to be site malfunctions for a variety of users consistently. Very low ratings overall.

StrideKick
$$$: $200/mo. For 100 users (3 month min.)
Pros: Probably the best option out there and highest rated for a mid-sized company
Cons: Pricey

You didn't mention the Garmin Forerunner 235, but it's at a cheaper pricepoint and came with everything I wanted besides the music, which admittedly if that's a big deal for you it could be worth the extra cost. For me I often run with a buddy or have my phone so I can call someone as a "just in case" option

Anyway you can get good refurb deals on the 235 at amazon (~$170). I figured if I got good mileage (heh) out of this one I'd be happy to upgrade later, and I liked the look a lot more than just the 35. At the cheaper pricepoint I'm also happy to buy more accessories, like say the HR monitor

u/kevtoon2905 · 3 pointsr/running

I would honestly stay clear of No Brand fitness trackers like that. The old saying "Buy Cheap, buy twice", rings true in the realm of tech.
You basically have no idea what you are buying and just "hoping it works", and I can guarantee you, that no name fitness tracker will die as soon as it see's water.
However, there is one exception that I think might fit the bill,
Google, the Xiaomi Mi Band 3. Xiaomi are a quite respected tech company and the band 3 can be found on amazon for £21 ($25ish).
It wins hands down in the real of budget fitness trackers.

Please do shop around to find the best price.

If there's a gym like the others said, then that will be your best option (Especially if dumbbells are available for modified kb work).

The best alternatives when there's no gym for when I do travel, is either bodyweight/calisthenic exercises or (my favorite), bringing resistance bands. I picked up one of those MMA bodylastic band sets that come with all the extra handles/limb-torso/door attachments, and you can get an unbelievably powerful workout with those. I like using the bands in general with different workouts just because of their broad application...

Here's the resistance band set I was talking about from the vendor on amazon: (~$100, now - was about $30 more when I bought it a few years back and still going) : http://www.amazon.com/Bodylastics-Resistance-Stackable-components-Bodylastic/dp/B005NADBXK

If anyone does some extensive traveling between hotels/etc, those bands are well worth the investment. These will fit into any travel bag perfectly... you don't need to bring all the bands/accessory attachments with you either for space and/or personal reasons.

I use the Mi Band 2 and I love it.

Mi Fitness Tracker, Xiaomi Band 2 Bluetooth 4.0 Smart Heart Rate Monitor IP67 Water-Resistant Wristband Watch With OLED Display Wearable Pedometer Activity Tracker for iPhone, Android phones - Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074Z7818B/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_af13Bb8PMJB90

It uses the Mi Fit app which you can sync with Google Fit. It's like 25 bucks! You can also buy different bands for it. I highly recommend it.

u/casey18cc · 1 pointr/triathlon

I can personally back up all the suggestions on the DC rainmaker article. The easiest and cheapest solution would be to try the Polar heart rate strap, which you can buy without their HR monitor.

I had the Garmin soft heart rate stap and both my wife and I had massive problems in the winter. We changed to the Polar stap and had 0 issues after that: http://www.amazon.com/Polar-Soft-Strap-Medium-XX-Large/dp/B007XCLU66?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

DC Rainmaker also suggests using electrode gel if you have issues, I found it helped when using the garmin HR stap, but because the polar resolved our HR reporting issues we haven't really used it.

If you are looking to replace your HR monitor, and are using a Garmin watch, my wife and I have had success with the new Garmin HRM-Tri, which is made of a different material than the soft heart rate straps. There is also a model strictly for running that is slightly cheaper http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-HRM-Run-Black-Red-Size/dp/B01708T7NA/ref=sr_1_11?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1462547828&sr=1-11&keywords=garmin+hr+monitor

u/zeeblee · 1 pointr/ems

I rock this lil puppy. Kinda pricey but it's a great heart rate monitor as well if you're into fitness.

I also have an H7 strap that I used with my iPod before getting a compatible GPS watch. It looks like Polar as discontinued the inexpensive HR watches that I remember them having. The strap should link to any watch with Bluetooth Smart, but Polar can be picky with what connects sometimes. There are some A300 watches for cheap ($35) on Amazon that say they are compatible with the H7 strap. That may your best bet. Hope you like pink because the other colors are $70 more expensive.

u/mwpfinance · 1 pointr/arduino

After a lot of research I found an obscure wearable insole technology with haptic feedback vibrations from some random company that made "smart insoles" with GPS navigation and step counting.

https://www.amazon.com/Lechal-Navigation-Fitness-Tracking-Insoles/dp/B01GFWQRY4

In 2015 the CEO was talking about an open SDK for them but it never happened. It also mentions on the box that there are certain "hands free gestures" you can do, but I can't find anything detailing what those gestures are.

If nothing else, it'd be interesting to take one apart and see what kind of motor they used for the feedback. I'm assuming it's pretty quiet.

I ordered the skin from Shirt Punch a week before Christmas and arrived soon after. Installing it was fairly simple and the quality is pretty nice.

The band I ordered off of Amazon as part of a set of bands designed for the Misfit Shine, they fit very well on the Plus and I decided to go with the white one as I felt it looked the best with the skin I have.

u/dafunkee · 6 pointsr/spartanrace

I bought a refurbished Garmin Forerunner 235 on Amazon, looks like it's $230 right now but maybe Black Friday could get it under $200? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MATKIWO/ref=twister_B07DPGR44N?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I used it for a Trifecta + two other OCRs and while I had to clean it pretty well after mud made the buttons hard to press, it's still working very well for me.

u/vagdesign · 5 pointsr/pebble

Probably Xiaomi Mi Band 3 (I own the previous model) or Huawei Smart band 2 (I own it)

Both have heart rate and last for 20days to a month!.

You don't call them watches, cause are thin, but do the job pretty well!

u/Kaisonic · 5 pointsr/GoPlus

This stretches around the gotcha and holds it perfectly. I have large wrists and it fits great, albeit on the last hole. Been using it for months!

Really? havent heard of it. Ill check it out now! thanks. Sounds like a great price.

This One yeah?

u/userx9 · 1 pointr/Parenting

The easiest thing is probably to work out at home. Get a bike or treadmill, and either get a set of resistance bands like this one, which I have and like a lot, or do a lot of bodyweight exercises. You can also work out with your baby, my daughter loves to copy me doing pushups and climbs all over me. For sure keep your back stretched and in good shape because there is SOOOO much bending and lifting and fenagling from weird angles. I messed my back up by being both out of shape and picking my daughter up out of her crib with poor form.

u/OneUniqueUnicorn · 1 pointr/pokemongo

I replaced the standard band with this and have been super happy! Plus, colors!

u/Lancet_Jade · 4 pointsr/Garmin

Garmin Instinct meets these criteria. Easy to read, affordable, lightweight, durable, and recently released (updated sleep tracking / hr sensor, etc).

However, it does lack Vo2 max, not compatible w/ HRM run chest-strap (no advanced running dynamics), and doesn't have advanced mapping.

Seems like most users are satisfied with it. I know I am.

Comes in at $300 new, or around $250 used (like new) on Amazon.

Non-Garmin options that come to mind are the Polar Vantage M ($279) or COROS Apex 46mm ($350)

u/AverageJoeBruin · 1 pointr/NewToEMS

Yeah, I don't really buy anything fancy for myself and I had money saved up so I said screw it, haha. Most expensive thing I own. Is this more in your budget? It doesn't have seconds on the watch face in the pictures and you need those for EMS. I'd wear this while working out/off duty and just wear a cheap Casio for work. Sorry to hear about the issue with the cardiologist. If that's the case, if you're in a decent shape I don't think the test with the county will be an issue.

u/Givemeallthecabbages · 3 pointsr/GoPlus

I got some bands for the Misfit Shine based on a review on Reddit. They're great, and connect to the GoPlus with its clip on. I have one band around my steering wheel, and can move it around as I like. They're comfy, too.

https://www.amazon.com/hellosy-Replacement-Wristband-Wireless-Activity/dp/B01CVQNH9Q/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1485398211&sr=8-4&keywords=misfit+shine+bands

u/monstermax · 4 pointsr/ultrarunning

Polar Vantage M

This thing has been absolutely rock solid - best accuracy of any watch I’ve used (Garmin 235, Fitbit, Apple previously). Has an advertised 30 hours battery life while GPS tracking. Just did a 50-miler two weekends ago, took 18 hours and still had about half battery life at the finish line.

u/Masterleon · 1 pointr/AndroidWear

Get one of these. It's extremely cheap and well supported and does exactly what you're looking for and more. It pops off the band like this and it has 30+ day battery life.

u/sparskter · 1 pointr/HearingLoss

I have hearing loss and I found that "Xiaomi Mi Band" works quite well. The software is very good and you can set-up multiple alarms. The way you choose. The vibration is strong enough to wake-up the person. Best yet: it will not disturb your husband/wife.

I use the version 2 but today you have the version 3 already:

u/lattephobia · 2 pointsr/proED

It's a Band 2 Pro!

There's a newer generation too but I haven't used it personally. I've been incredibly pleased with the performance and durability of this one though.

I got it last March, fell into a binge mode around July and left it in a drawer until the last week of September, and the charging time /battery life don't seem affected at all. It's been swimming in chlorinated pools, winged against counters more times than I can count, and let drain to 0% on too many occasions and the little beast only has a bit of wear on the inside of the wrist to show for all that.

I had looked into it during the sober october podcast and pretty quickly determined it was a piece of shit. Who knows, maybe the pressure JRE put on them will inspire some quality improvements.

There is a 3rd party device called gotcha that is apparently better than the go+. It doesn't have the software hiccups the go+ does apparently although the game thinks it is a go+.

For others that were also curious, the Feenix is $450 (Feenix 3 on Amazon). However, there are other models that look like they have colored displays which can run up to $700

u/Zalbu · 2 pointsr/Garmin

I'm 6'3 and 215 lbs and I think the Fenix 3 is a bit too big for me, so I'd probably go for a smaller watch if I were you. Do you have any store nearby where you can look at the watches? Because a GPS watch is going to be really big compared to a regular fitness band.

If you don't need the triathlon features of the Fenix 3 then I'd definitely go with something like this instead, it's a bit cheaper and weighs less than half as much as the Fenix 3 and you can probably find an even better deal if you look around at other sites. The battery life won't be quite as long but that's just the tradeoff you have to do with getting a smaller watch, and it still lasts for more than a week without charging if you don't do GPS tracking activities often.

> "May not work the way it's intended"

Lol.

Yeah, the reviews do actually communicate that: https://www.amazon.com/IFit-Graphite-Classic-Fitness-Tracker/dp/B012IYSJBC/

Basic gotcha gets the job done for least investment. Its the first model that has 99% of features new models have. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y5BTX8L/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_HY-wDbVK5FF7X)
The Ranger is basically an upgraded model from the same brand which has a bigger battery with the same feature set. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FNXQPZK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_mG-wDb9AE5S88)
Dual catchmon is from a different company and allows multiple connections at the same time. Great for playing with friends or with multiple accounts. Also is the most expensive one. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PHJJD3Z/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_RI-wDbZJ2P45R)
I personally have the basic gotcha and love it. Battery lasts a few hours but charges in five minutes. I would consider getting the dual catchmon for the multi account functionality.

I picked mine up sold by Amazon.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06Y5BTX8L

So I'd always be confident in their returns and customer service (especially warranty support). When it comes to CodeJunkies direct I'd always be a bit hesitant for the messing about that you potentially could face when Amazon is a known quantity. Also after the cost of postage for me it worked out cheaper.

u/Abcmsaj · 4 pointsr/TheSilphRoad

Done some research into them and the reviews on Amazon are only 3.5 stars on average - are they really worth it? I'll pick one up if so... saves me having to learn to solder!

Its an unofficial device that mimics the Pokemon Go Plus except instead of just alerting you about pokemon and pokestops it can actually grab them automatically. Theres also a manual mode that acts just like a regular Go Plus, but the main feature is the auto mode.

This. Myzone MZ-3 tracker. Evidently not the cheapest version of fitness tracker.

For example, can you tell which year this is?

Dresses with pockets are a rare find so what I do is clip mine onto a bracelet that I read about another trainer using and keep it flipped upside down. I too am a manager and as long as I am not running meetings I keep it on and use it. When I am up front and presenting I keep it on my lap. I did have someone ask me if it was a step tracker and i giggled and said kinda and then told her what it was. They all think I am crazy for playing, I think they are crazy for not...

u/earthspirit1147 · 8 pointsr/GoPlus

We have ordered 5 go-tcha's from amazon with no issues at all. Made by Datel, the same ones you can get at gamestop. I have never heard of anyone getting banned for one. If you order on Amazon, just pay attention to the seller's name. Nintendo sells the go-plus, Datel sells the Go-tcha.
