Ask them for the patent numbers if their kickstand is patented.
Spec wise it doesn't seem too far out there. They are just repackaging a standard panel and control board in a neat case (which could explain the interface shift as they are off the shelf components from suppliers).
If you want to take a less risky option, just buy one that's already available and grab a USB power pack - https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-MB169B-1920x1080-Portable-Monitor/dp/B013XFJKGI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1549341182&sr=8-3&keywords=portable+monitor+1080p

This is well above your budget but it's the only pre-assembled portable monitor I've been able to find with an actual HDMI input and an IPS panel. 15.6-inch 1080p 60 Hz screen. I haven't used one myself but it seems to have good reviews. Dunno if Amazon U.S. ships to New Zealand or if it's available on other sites you can use if it doesn't, though. If anyone knows of a cheaper non-DIY option I'm all ears myself, since paying $350 USD for a portable monitor that in all likelihood won't even be your main one is really excessive.
I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018DXABEU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
but this is the newer version: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M7RMBV9/ref=dp_prsubs_1
It's pretty good for a portable monitor. I know mine has a speaker, but don't know if the newer one does(the speaker sucks anyways). It's powered by either one USB 3.0 or 2 USB 2.0(or lower).
A friend of mine has the 720p version of this and likes it. https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Monitor-Powered-Ultralight-Speakers/dp/B01M7RMBV9/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1526414206&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=gechic+15
I'm not interested in an actual monitor, as it would take some hacking and DIY to make it work for the application correctly and store in luggage for traveling.
My other options are something similar to this. Which would work perfectly fine, no issues. But it's not 1080p..
Another one would be this but that's a bit pricey for 1080p.
I was just trying to find a way to make what I originally listed work before settling for 720p, or spending an extra $150 on the 1080p.

Hacky idea: $314, which gets me 120hz and Gsync
GeChic Monitor: $350.
I mean, theoretically.

It's portable, and works really well. Stick it in your backpack.
