I don't backpack or do any long hiking (just camping and day hikes). This is all coming from a strength & conditioning POV.

But IMO peanuts or any other nuts are harder to digest, and some studies have even shown that we don't even use all of the nutrients that comes from nuts, so no.

Simple sugars will always be easier to digest, so spoonfuls of sugar would be one of the easiest sources of carbs, but wouldn't taste very good.

Something like this would be one of the most simple forms of sugar you could consume. These types of gels is what most endurance athletes use.

This is awesome. I would recommend trading in the candy for some glucose paste. It's much more effective, and less of a choking hazard.
