I use an oversized duffel to put my gear and backpack in. The added benefit is it protects your backpack and prevents any straps from being torn off or ripped during baggage handling.

It is not water proof, but I honestly I've had waterproof bags and they fail after a bit in one way or another. So I got a very well reviewed cheap 20 dollar water resistant bag and I line the whole thing with a very thick trash bag. The trash bag inside will last quite a while and it's cheap.

As far as souvenirs go, my airline allows a free checked bag, so I bought this packable duffel bag to stow away in my luggage on the way there. On the way back I plan to pack it full of any non-fragile things and put the more precious souvenirs in my carryon.

Of course, I plan on buying lots of fabric items and plastic trinkets, but if you are buying whiskey bottles and pottery this may not work for you.
