I don't know what others do, but here's my routine that works nicely.
Condition with beard conditioner every day. I'm also using Grave Before Shave oils and balms, and I'm more than a little upset they haven't made a conditioner yet because I think it would be glorious.
Except once you get decent beard growth, if not sooner, you'll regret using head shampoo on your face. Regular shampoos are meant to strip all the oil/"grease" out of your hair, but beards actually need those natural oils to keep you from itching your face off, and to keep the hair healthy. As someone who's done Minoxidil (on my way out now, for the most part), I can tell you that just the Minox. is enough, and you'll thank me later for buying a beard shampoo, with some oils in it, when your face doesn't feel like you wore socks to bed (in other words: sore). Most of those hair-thickening shampoos are snake oil, anyway, and they're mostly meant to keep the hair (on your head) that you already have nice and healthy—they won't grow new hair or actually thicken up transitional hairs, as they're just meant to keep your hair from being all nasty and dead, split ends, etc.
If you're interested in recommendations, I've been using some beard shampoo by Grave Before Shave, which has Argan oil, but there are plenty of others out there if it's not quite what you're looking for.
