I can't recommend Ed Friedland bass method books enough. He starts with the open strings, then you read on the low E first position, then A and then D and G. Once you finish all three books, you'll be able to read practically anything that doesn't soar above the first two lines above the bass clef. I do all three books with all my students and there's really no limit to what they can read afterwards.

But here's a book I've been working through and so far finding quite good.
