If you're brand new and starting to learn with brand new players, I suggest starting with one of the "Starter Set" boxes. They come with everything you need to start playing: dice, rules, maps, adventures. All you need are some friends (LOL... that sounds funny). The "demogorgan" from the Stranger Things starter might be what you are looking for. CR4, 60 HP, regeneration, blood frenzy, claw/claw/bite. they didnt give it any crazy mind stuff though like fear or illusions which is kinda weird.

The books I'm not as bothered by, because as you say they are similar priced or close enough that it's not a big issue, would just be nice to get an equivalent pricing

As I've said i love the content but like hell am i pay that much when i can save money importing it.
Not sure if you guys saw this or not, but there's a DnD Stranger Things Starter Set. Kinda cool.
I would pick up one of the starter sets and playing through the adventure included in it. There are a few options, like the D&D Starter Set or the Stranger Things D&D Starter Set, you can find both online and at either your local gaming store or even at stores like Target or Walmart.
You can consider getting the starter set that Stranger Things released. There is always the option of the 5e Starter Set which has gotten a lot of people, including myself, into the swing of things.
