PC's aren't equipped with line-in out of the box like macs are. If you take a look at the jacks, you'll notice one is for your headphones and one is for your microphone. What you're looking for is a headset pc adapter, something like this. All you have to do is plug in those two things into the headphone and mic jacks and everything will work.
You'd have to do this anyway with any non-usb headset you buy.
you're going to need a 4 conductor splitter like this one.
I use these splitters for my headset (SHP9500s + V-MODA BoomPro). It doesn't have a mute switch, but it is about 4 feet long.
How well do these work with regards to stero quality?

Looking to replace my Astros with some Etymoic earbuds with mic but want to be able to use the mic and not have a loss of audio quality
This seems to be one of the better reviewed ones:

There are still people who've had issues with it, but at $7, I'd say it's worth the risk.
yes. the wire it has, has both mic and headphone in one. There isnt a port on your pc that is both. You can buy a splitter on amazon for pretty cheap. Something like this would fix your issue
You need one of these to plug the 3.5mm plug into so it will split into mic and spk.https://smile.amazon.com/BAPHIILE-B3-Headphone-Splitter-Computer/dp/B0151G0LB0/ref=sr_1_1
I'd give this a try. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0151G0LB0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_9TKNzb5BB96J9
Mine was short but I'm sure you can find a longer one on there. See this one that's 4ft:
