Stores give you this type of super-thin, flimsy plastic bag. They come apart with the slightest of damage. Because they're so flimsy, stores usually double-bag unless you're buying something small where the bag will hold.

What I assume the parent and others are buying is something like Hefty trash bags or similar. They're thicker and relatively durable, and if you use them for recycling or non-goopy trash (e.g. my bathroom trash is typically just paper towels, contact lens containers and so on), they can be emptied and reused.

The problem with the supermarket bags is that they're essentially not reusable. Most of them don't even qualify as trash bin liners. (I come from Europe, where plastic bags are much more durable and can be used dozens of times, or as good trash bin liners.) If you can reuse a bag, that's obviously much better for the environment.

The most environmentally friendly shopping bag is one that can be washed and is durable enough to last many years, and preferably made of a natural fabric, not some polyester-type material.
