Small portable speakers, like this one. These aren't on the missionary supply list, and they aren't forbidden. I had something similar and I used it all the time.
He'll probably be getting an iPad (since that's the new thing), which he can hook up to that speaker wirelessly. I don't know if he'll have a chance to put music on the iPad, but there will probably be members who will help him with that. If not, we all had portable CD players back in 2005, maybe he'll want to take one...
Since he's in Europe, he'll have to keep in mind that there are different types of power outlets, but once he has an adapter, which I'm sure is on his list already, he should be fine.
