> Haswell is still more or less the same price as Skylake (3.0 GHz Haswell is $200 on Newegg right now, 3.0 GHz Skylake is $204).

This is because of its age and socket type. Often times computer parts retain or actually increase their value as they age due to varying requirements.

The 4790k (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117369&cm_re=4790k-_-19-117-369-_-Product) is the same price as the 6700k (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117559&cm_re=6700k-_-19-117-559-_-Product) even though the 6700k is better in every regard.

The only reason this is the case is because of the different (and older) socket type, and has nothing to do with the inherent performance of the CPU itself. If someone still has an 1150 mobo and wants to upgrade it's still cheaper to pay for the 4790k over the 6700k since the latter would require a mobo upgrade as well.

Same reason 2600k is MORE expensive than 6700k and by a large margin (https://www.amazon.com/Intel-i7-2600K-Quad-Core-Processor-Cache/dp/B004FA8NOQ)

Now, with that said, this trend does not hold true within the same, and most current sockets. The release of Kaby Lake will undoubtedly lower the prices of Skylake since it falls within the same generation cycle.

Just took a look around, used 2600k's are still going for a lot over at amazon

Surprised the heck out of me given how old the thing is.

I've got a used Intel i7-2600k 3.4GHz, quad core. 1155. This is a link to what I have (I'm not the one selling it on amazon and ignore the sell price that guy is crazy)

That appears to be a Gigabyte Z68MA-D2H-B3.

Intel i7-2600k Quad Core 3.4Ghz.

Damn that's actually a pretty solid combination.

Edit: Since OP has updated.

Yea it's like a $50-60 difference between the old 2nd gen used and a brand new i5-6600k on Amazon.

So what would be some good CPU's to base a build on?

The i7-6700K @ 4.0 ghz for LGA1151 architecture -
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B010T6DQTQ or i5 alternative

The i7-4790k @ 4.0 ghz for LGA 1150 architecture -
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00KPRWAX8 or i5 alternative

and the i7-2600K @3.4 ghz for LGA 1155 architecture -
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004FA8NOQ (Can't be bothered to find an i5 alternative).

I'd love to see a proper break down of FPS for difference CPUs

Edit - see a great response from /u/randonneur16
