Regarding number two, I have one of these:

You could use a mitre saw and box or something similar, I have on really large diameter tubing.

If I had to scratch-build the piping, I'd cut my own segments in styrene or metal, and thread it through something appropriate. In fact, I have to do this in an upcoming Hi-Zack build...
