9-12 months is when a lot of dogs can get a little out of hand, but it usually settles down after they grow up a bit. At that age, my husky liked chew stuff up, eat socks, and hump everything that sat still for more than a few seconds. After a couple months, it just stopped. So hold out hope that most of this behavior is just a phase.

In the mean time, definitely don't ever use the crate as punishment. I put my dogs in a spare bedroom when they are in trouble, so that their bed space and trouble space are in different parts of the house.

You could also try a different type of crate liner like this one: http://www.petsmart.com/dog/supplies-and-training/crates-gates-and-containment/mats-and-pads/kong-dog-crate-mat-18313.html?cgid=100087

or this one that has a "90-Day Chew Proof Guarantee":

I also keep a heavy blanket over the crate to make it more of an enclosed space. Your dog may respond well to being in a darker space when in the crate as it can sometimes make them feel safer and hopefully calm them down.
