Definitely ask her where she got it from & why she's getting rid of it. As nice & altruistic as it is to rescue a pet from a home that doesn't want it, you might get greater satisfaction from a hedgehog purchased directly from a reputable breeder, because they will be better socialized to humans. If it came from a pet store originally it likely was not handled enough & will ball up & spike out when you try to hold her. & who wants a pet that you can't actually pet?!

You should definitely visit the seller before committing to the purchase, pick the hedgehog up & if she doesn't unball & start sniffing around your hand within a minute I would not take her. Grumpy, antisocial hedgehogs require a lot more effort than ones who are already predisposed to be friendly. Being a grump makes everything harder - picking it up, playing with it, clipping it's nails, bathing it.

I've had Manbun for 2 months, & have been told both the breeder & the vet that she is an exceptionally sweet & friendly hedgehog. I handle her for at least half an hour a day, but it's pretty passive bonding, a lot like a cat. Usually right when I get home from work while I watch an episode of tv or Netflix she'll just chill on my lap in a snuggle sack or lay directly on my chest. I can usually just scoop her up out of her cage without her balling up. She's great with people - I've even brought her out to parties before in carrying cage & let people play with her. It makes me so sad when I read about poorly socialized hedgehogs that are no fun to play with.

Now onto your questions!

  1. It should be fine near the tv, I keep mine in my bedroom & she's fine when I have the TV on in there or when I bring her out into the living room to play with while I watch a show. It might even prompt you to play with her more, if I'm watching tv I'm pretty much always handling my hedgehog.

  2. I got [this cage from Amazon]<https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00933KYRY> & it's on the larger end of what you'd need for a single hedgehog but it comfortably fits her hiding igloo, wheel, litter tray, & food & water dishes, with room in the middle to play. Definitely do not get a cage smaller than 24" x 24" or you won't have room to fit everything. Make sure the cage has a solid plastic bottom (not wire/mesh) & at least 6" high solid walls because their little feet will get caught in the holes in the mesh & get injured.

I use 2 layers of newspaper to line the bottom of her cage. For the first month I used carefresh cardboard pulp bedding but I switched last month to fleece (I cut ~10 6"x18" strips & it keeps the cage cleaner so now I can clean it every 1.5-2 weeks instead of every week. I just toss all the dirty strips into the wash & put in fresh ones. You can buy yards of fleece in expensively on Amazon. Because she is litter trained (which happened effortlessly within the first week that I had her) her cage stays pretty clean, I just change out her litter ever 2 days or so. I clean her wheel when I clean her cage, I soak it in a wash basin for a minute to loosen the dried poop then wipe it off with Clorox wipees & rinse. Overall her cage maintenance takes a total of <30 minutes a week - counting daily food refills, litter changes, & whole cage cleaning.

  3. Close to the heater is fine, but you're going to want farther away from the a.c. The cage should never get lower than 70F (ideally 75-80F) or you risk your hedgehog going into hibernation, which they may not come out of & will die. You'll want to buy a thermometer for the cage so you can easily check the temp. My roommates like to have the a.c. often so I have a ceramic heat lamp installed in her cage & I also have a space heater pointed directly at her cage that switches on for ~5 min every hour.

  4. No shots, they require very little vet intervention unless something is wrong. You should take your hedgehog in for a checkup after you get her just to make sure everything is looking good. Depending on where you live these could be expensive - I live in a big city & spent $100 on a 10 minute checkup.

But another reason to purchase from a breeder & not second-hand is that many breeders will have warranties again wobbly hedgehog syndrome - mine will provide a new hedgehog free of charge if WHS is determined to be the cause of death.

    Good luck getting your hog!
