Powered speakers. Almost any of these will be better than a sound bar.

A "passive" bookshelf speakers need an integrated stereo amplifier or avr receiver in order to work while the "active" speakers (with built-in amplifier) are the one you want " plug and play (I wouldn’t need to purchase anything else) ".

One example of a powered speaker is Klipsch R-51PM, this is just an example of a decent active speakers. They are expensive but you can look for something similar or used and refurbished ones.

These Klipsch speakers come with a bluetooth receiver built in, will play fairly loud, and have grills to cover the front if you don't like the look of the drivers: https://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-R-51PM-Powered-Bluetooth-Speaker/dp/B07FKCP7PZ/ Comes with a remote.

These Klipsch, also with bluetooth, have a volume and selector switch on the front so you don't have to rely on the remote: https://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-Sixes-Powered-Monitor-Walnut/dp/B01MZYT1RF/

Nice! Yeah I read they were a little forward on the top end. I was looking to ditch my av receiver and 5.1 setup. these and the kantos looked really attractive with their plethora of inputs! I can hook up a TV and a turntable and not have to worry about an integrated amp/phono pre plus I can change volume and inputs with remote.

Edit: sorry, was referring to the PMs. Bit of a price difference haha
