Where do you play without a table or desk? I can't imagine trying to play with a touch pad. Maybe you could try a lap desk type of thing? The game would have to be so much more rewarding when you can select targets and turn efficiently.

may not be exactly what you're looking for, but some people have speculated that the steam controller with the two touch pads might be decent for strategy games. It's not out yet obviously, but it seems interesting.
I would just use the simplest lap desk. Something like this is 25 bucks and would hold a small mechanical keyboard and a mouse just fine while I sat on the couch.
You mention more room for your mouse, how big is your keyboard? I think a tenkeyless or smaller could live in harmony with a mouse, full sized not so much.

No personal experience with it, but this looks good.
Right now I'm using a long wood board that I was going to sand, stain and polish, but I've been lazy and haven't gotten around to it -.-. Will probably just pick up that from amazon as it looks like it has decent length.
Maybe if you're a handy craftsman, fashion something yourself? A swiveling table that you can just swerve over your lap when in use, and then rotate away when done.
