We just went through this- our girl got spayed at the shelter before coming home so wasn't able to get bathed and was really dirty...she also hadn't been bathed since being dropped at the shelter. We used grooming wipes and brushed her with this deodorizing spray every day (it smells really nice!). It really helped for the two weeks before we could get her all cleaned up. She had some bad mats under her ears that the shelter actually cut off while she was under anesthesia- might be worth asking if they could do that?
