(About the ear plugs and eye mask, the reason I started using these is because I read a study about how to help people sleep in hospital settings. The eye masks and ear plugs helped participants in the study.)
I use this one for ~$6 on Amazon. It is a comfy material and it has extra padding under the eyes which keeps the mask off my face a bit and helps with blocking light out. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000SKXRNO/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
A sleeping mask is another (probably cheaper) option.
The Lewis N. Clark Comfort Eye Mask has a pillow that runs along the bottom to block just such light intrusions. Would recommend. It's made of a cloth material; occasionally i'll prefer my silk one - but this is my 'daily driver'.
