I use a USB 3.0 flash drive and I haven't seen any issues with it. I've been meaning to benchmark the speeds while connected to my Shield TV. It's a Lexar P20, advertised as 400MB/s but seems to benchmark around 175MB/s. Either way, it absolutely destroys an SD card.
