This. And I call bullshit on you not having the time to get some exercise during your "busy but sedentary day". Sure, you may not have the time to hit the gym or take a shower if you get sweaty, but you can get more exercise during the day... Walk between meetings or appointments. No time? Park further away and walk fast for a few minutes.

Stuck at a desk on the phone?

Swap your chair for one of these http://www.amazon.com/Gaiam-Balance-Ball-Chair-Black/dp/B0007VB4NE/ref=sr_1_22?ie=UTF8&qid=1325090871&sr=8-22

Get one of these under the desk http://www.amazon.com/Stamina-15-0120-InStride-Cycle-XL/dp/B000PEM63K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1325090675&sr=8-2

If you can make this work in your office and have the funds, I highly recommend this http://www.amazon.com/LifeSpan-Fitness-TR1200-DT-Treadmill-Desk/dp/B006M2PJV0/ref=sr_1_53?ie=UTF8&qid=1325090932&sr=8-53

Sling some weight while on conference calls http://www.amazon.com/Cap-Barbell-Neoprene-Dumbbell-5-Pound/dp/B002OEU3KC/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1325091060&sr=8-5

My point is that your best chance at success is not to come up with excuses or be a victim. Instead, figure out how to get some exercise, in spite of being busy and having a sedentary job. Sure, it's not the same as freeing up an hour or two a day to 'hit the gym', but if you can get 25% of your exercise requirements addressed without adding a 25th hour to your day, your 25% closer to your end goal.

Lots of little things add up... A little more exercise, a little more water intake, a little more attention to portion control, a little more of your plate filled with veggies. Suddenly, a new you! You can do this.

For me it comes down to 3 key pieces.

  1. Backpack. I use the Nike Cheyenne Vapor backpack, which can clamp down to your waist and chest with straps. I always have a work laptop, paper/pen, etc. In this video he cites the "media pocket". I use it to store my wallet and therefore it's always on my chest. This backpack is also excellent in the rain and can protect everything even in a massive downpour.

  2. Shoes. I use a lot of minimal shoewear like vibram fivefingers (bikila), merrell shoes (sonic glove, trail glove). The key to running is quality form and landing on the ball of your foot. I run for a low jog pace because that is highest correlation with longevity and healthspan. I wear Injinji toesocks. I've worn black injinji toesocks and black vibrams fivefingers with a suit to business meetings before. I get some odd looks when people notice, but I honestly couldn't care less.

  3. Clothing. This is a lot so I'll just say for general running gear, I use Brooks Running. It's expensive but worth it. I have multiple Brooks jackets for different environments (running in the cold, rain, mild/chilly). I think good fitting pants are critical. I have Brooks pants. But I can run in J. Crew Urban Slim Fit jeans with no problem. I have some well tailored incotex pants which are expensive but they are still mobile/yet tight enough on my body to let me run.

My running tops tend to look like this. Brands I prefer are brooks, saucony, gore, pearl izumi. I buy them when they are on sale/clearance. I buy custom dress shirts from HK which is expensive but they fit my body perfectly so I can move fine. I tend to buy running clothing when it's 50%+ off on Amazon.com through searches. Also, when I find something I like I often search on Ebay or set up saved search/triggers to try to find stuff on discount.

Other incidental gear like gloves, hats, etc. you might need to depending on where you live.

I also converted my work desk so I am literally moving all day.

My whole list says that I REALLY like clothes and gadgets. I think this says that I'm an awesome mom (at least, I like to think so), and this says that I am perfectly aware of my level of addiction to technology, but I won't let that stand in the way of getting exercise. :P

Both are also from my overpriced list that's really there just for shits and giggles.

Oh man. So I have the craziest item in that it is super expensive and I know I a) won’t ever be able to afford to buy it for myself and b) of course no one else can afford it for me either. But it would be the perfect thing to help me lose weight and be productive at the same time. I’ve heard of a couple people (richer people lol) who have them and love them!

But I also have this and this which are crazy because they are just weird. lol One is a car fridge (who needs that?! lol) and the other is one of the many weird board games I want.

Edit: Realized you said under $25, and the craziest thing I have under that is this. I love all the thinking putties and might buy myself one eventually.

No joke... hard as hell to take notes when walking on it, but I usually pause it when I need to write something down. For flashcards, videos, reading, etc... I'm walking on it and it keeps me awake.
