This one is cheaper, compact, and uses all the best arcade parts. You will have to use joytokey to map the inputs on PC however.

This one is really solid and i'm a fan of hori buttons/sticks
Pad:
I'm not knowledgeable on pads, but these ones are talked about the most to me:

The MadCatz Fight Stick Alpha features a six button layout, and is portable/mod-able. From what I understand, you can just clip the buttons out that are hardwired, add quick connects to the ends of the clipped wires, then just add your Sanwa buttons in that way.

I ended up going with a MadCatz Fightstick Alpha, and I'm very pleased with it.

(I've got a bunch of pictures of it on my blog: https://rpgrabbit.wordpress.com/2017/09/21/rpg-rabbit-fightsticks-it-to-amazon/)
I doubt any actual hardcore player of fighting games would like this stick very much, especially if they do not have tiny hands, but since I have very small hands AND a very small lap, it's right about me-sized. It has a stick control toggle switch to let the joystick serve as the left stick, right stick, or d-pad, and that ended up being exactly what I needed for ARPGs!
Thanks everyone for all of the great suggestions. I learned a whole bunch about fightsticks during this process!
OHH, You're using a 360 pad?!? Literally anything is an upgrade, lol

These are cheap economy sticks. See if you like them, and consider upgrading later.
If you're on ps4, even if you find a decent stick that cheap, you'll have to buy a converter which is ~$40. If you're on PC you'll have more options but they won't be great.
The [alpha] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018HXA6H8/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_9Cr7wbEGW0X5C) and seems like your only hope
I mean, if you prefer a stick then you prefer a stick. I'm the same way. Of course, when I got into fighting games it was with SF4 on the 360 and that controller's pad was absolute ass. Some of the best players in my local scene play with a pad, though, as well as players that win majors.
If you're looking for a PS4 stick, there's the Fightstick Alpha that's a bit on sale atm http://www.amazon.com/Fighter-FightStick-PlayStation4-PlayStation3-playstation-4/dp/B018HXA6H8
One of the guys I play with has one. It's not as flimsy and poorly built as you might expect, but it is pretty small.
Apparently theyre having a sale as well, here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/Fighter-FightStick-PlayStation4-PlayStation3-playstation-4/dp/B018HXA6H8
Is this any good as a super budget fightstick?

(its the Mad Catz Street Fighter V Arcade FightStick Alpha for ps4/ps3) I want one for pc.
right now the Mad catz TES+ is on sale for 150
The Hori Rap4 Kai ussually goes for around 150, the Rap5 usually goes for the same amount or 160
The Mad catz Alpha is decent i still recommend you get the "big boy sticks"
The sony Venom if you buy it from amazon uk it should be around 86$ US if my conversion is right please check.
I dont recommend doing this but you could buy a razor atrox on sale for cheap right now for $80 and buy a brooks converter to play on ps4 here
out of everything i think the Mad Catz TES+ and the Hori Rap4 are the two best out of all the options here.
Here is a review on the Rap4 Kai the video is solid but these guys are hori fan boys
Here is a review for a TES+ i may be biased because i like mad catz
All honesty They are both good sticks. The main differences is the parts. The Hori has a very fast and responsive stick that everyone likes and the buttons are not arcade standard but people have grown to like them for their feel after they are broken in. The Mad catz stick uses Japanese Standard Sanwa parts so they both the stick and buttons feel great, the Mad catz stick is a little easier on moding for aesthetics i've heard but all in all they are the same. and for now the same price pick witch ever fits your needs or witch ever looks cooler to you.
you could always go for a madcatz alpha if you like arcade sticks but want something more portable, or obviously a fightpad if you really want a controller
if you're dead set on a gamepad, either the xbox one gamepad or the steam controller, since you can set to analog to act as a clicky arcade stick when you set the haptics all the way up (which is what I used to use)
Fantastic starting stick:

(It's internals are technically a PS4 controller. Works natively on PC and PS4/PS3.
