Jellycat Soft Books were the first things my baby played with. He loved the crinkly pages.
He loves this Fisher-Price owl toy. That one had held his interest since he was really tiny. He liked how it jingles when he was really little. Now, he loves the balls.
This Melissa and Doug shape sorter is another favorite. He still doesn't know how to put the shapes back, but he loves to play with them.
This Baby Einstein music box is another one that he's loved for a long time. (It's battery-operated though.)
This black and white picture/mirror really caught his attention as a newborn. The black and white drawings on one side really capture newborns' attention because they can't distinguish colors well. The mirror side is better for when they're a little older. These Wimmer-Ferguson toys and books are designed especially for newborns.
Of course, he liked (and still does) O-balls.

My daughter is 12 weeks old now and this is by far the greatest thing I've bought. We tied it on the side of her crib and she will just lay there staring at it until she peacefully falls asleep. We use the black and white side now and I expect she'll be amused by her reflection soon so we can flip it over. I didn't know this until after I had my daughter, but babies love black and white things. Apparently they can't see minor differences in colors so the contrast of black and white catches their eye.
Also, if your wife plans to breastfeed, buy either Lansinoh (or Target brand, if you're in the US) nursing pads. I was constantly frustrated by leaking milk all over my clothes everyday until I bought these. They absorb milk in the same way a diaper absorbs pee. These work better than any other kind, disposable or washable.
Swaddling blankets are a must. The Aden+Anais swaddling blankets are worth the money, in my opinion. I have other ones that aren't as big or as soft and I prefer A+A.
For activites, I swore by anything Wimmer Fergueson. My LO loved to look at her "activity board" and mobile.

You can also read to him/her, and at this stage you can read just about anything. Whatever book interests you - read out loud to your kiddo. You'll get the satisfaction of a good book and interacting with your babe.
