Last year a buddy and I took a 1300 mile trip around Colorado /r/dualsport ride on a Husqvarna 701 and a Yamaha WR250R. Here's a photo of the gear from last year.

This year we are adding one person (riding a monster, brand new, KTM 1090 Adventure R) to the crew and moving a little farther west to see some of the amazing sites in Utah. I put together a 1500 mile route, and will tack on White Rim Trail (if we can get passes) and wander around in Beef Basin for a bit.

A few of my friends have started using Polar Steps, so I've setup a trip and will try to keep it updated. I also maintain a simple website and will post photos on my flickr account.

Now, on to the fun, because sorting out gear and packing is half the fun of a /r/motocamping trip.

I'm involved in volunteer search and rescue (/r/searchandrescue) so a lot of this gear comes from my callout pack and extended incident command packs. The more experienced riders will notice that I'm lacking any tools, spares, tube slime, etc. I'm fortunate enough to be riding with 2 other riders that are packing all that jazz.

Two mottos:

  1. buy once, cry once
  2. high speed, low drag

I installed this on my bike in the spring: https://www.amazon.ca/Motorcycle-Recording-HaloCam-Waterproof-Recorder/dp/B07D371DRF/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?keywords=m1+dashcam&qid=1562710500&s=gateway&sr=8-2

Automatically records any time the ignition is on, recordings automatically loop, and it has WiFi so you don't need to put the head unit in an accessible location. Highly recommended, maintenance free.

Having fussed with the cables, the short battery life, and forgetting to turn the thing on that comes with GoPros and clones (so called Action Cameras) I got an Innovv dual cam and have not looked back.

Not having to worry about battery life degrading over time and keeping it charged is fantastic.

EDIT: Looks like they make cheaper knock-off versions of the Innovv. May be worth looking into.

I just installed several electrical accessories to my bike, the only one I wanted to do but didn't have time for was a dash cam. I'm looking at this one now:

If you ride every day you could probably hook it straight up to your battery and wire up a switch to it if you weren't going to ride in a while so it won't drain your battery. I put a programmable relay on mine so I can choose to let it stay on for up to 10 minutes after I shut the bike off, but then it will cut power to keep from draining the battery.

Yes, I had several SD cards that I would swap out if I wanted to save a clip, otherwise I just deleted the contents through the menu every couple hours. This was a pain for me too when I used it on my motorcycle, but I have since installed this motorcycle dashcam that has front and rear cameras, GPS, and a smartphone app to view and control using a phone in a ram mount on the handlebars. I have the DVR unit mounted under the seat, wired to power on (and start recording automatically) with ignition key on.
