MSI RX 480 on Amazon. $200, $180 after rebate.

Much, much faster than a 1050.

u/DoctorWSG · 5 pointsr/buildapc
Definitely! Personally, I wouldn't bother buying a cooler. The i3-6100 is a very cool chip unless you are planning on overclocking it using BCLK, which I wouldn't recommend to be honest. It's a lot of work for not a lot of gain, and you would be better off putting the money towards the i5-6400 by dropping the Z170 motherboard. In addition to that, you could also get an RX480, and follow-up with the $20 rebate and the build below would be about as much as the build you have listed.

Replaced the monitor below with one that has an IPS for much less money, a PSU that has a better rep than Rosewill, an SSD for your operating system because an HDD and extra storage can always be added later, and I recommend one day making that ram dual channel, because it does help a little bit in games, but I'm trying to stay in budget.

Overall, you should see some massive improvements in performance if you pick up the i5-6400/RX480 combo over the i3-6100/1050ti combo.

Here is what I have made. The rx480 4gb, and a freesync monitor. All less than $850.
Go to this amazon link and look under the price. You will notice there is a $20 mail in rebate on top of the great sale price https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GAMING-RX-480-4G/dp/B01KIZUF7Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1478343061&sr=1-1&keywords=rx+480 .
For the monitor, find it on jet.com and use the promo code triple15 when you add it to your cart.

We need more specs for your system, but I'm gonna make a few assumptions and make a few reasonably cheap suggestions. INB4 some dude comes in and like "oh you need dual GTX 1080 and 3-4k monitors and blah blah blah". I'm giving advice assuming he's not a Saudi Prince with millions of dollars to spare.

The 6870 isn't a TERRIBLE card. You could make it run OKAY with medium settings and you're probably going to run into a bottleneck with that CPU if you upgrade GPU first anyways.

You honestly should start saving for new Motherboard + CPU combo. the BEST processor you can possibly get for your motherboard is Core 2 Extreme QX9650. This motherboard socket is so old, I would go as far to say that it would be very difficult to even find this CPU. The BEST CPU for your socket came out November 14, 2007. So basically, you need to start from the ground up.

Please note that all of my "is more powerful than" numbers come from passmark CPU benchmark scores, and that I'm using Intel Core2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00GHz Score: 2,172 for your CPU

If you wanna go cheap as possible, but still an upgrade, and upgradable in the future , this is about your best bet. This CPU is only about 1.4X stronger (passmark score 2,976), and I highly reccomend you upgrade it to something better than this, but this is the CHEAPEST upgrade option that would allow you to upgrade better in the future.

CPU

Intel Celeron G1840 2.8GHz Dual-Core Processor $38.99 SuperBiiz

Motherboard

MSI H81M-E34 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard $50.88 OutletPC

A little bit better CPU option on that same motherboard would be Intel Core i3-4170, which has roughly 2.5x the power of your current one (passmark CPU score of 5,129)
Intel Core i3-4170 cost about $120 at outletpc

Stepping it up a bit, http://pcpartpicker.com/list/LJQLr7

Gigabyte GA-H110M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard - $50

Core i5-6500 ~$200

Rosewill HIVE 550W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply - $30-50

This CPU is quite powerful, approx 3.5X more powerful than your current CPU, and probably one of the more popular gaming CPUs. People may say you need more, but for like 98% of people, this is way plenty for power. With this CPU, you pretty much won't have a bottleneck for at least the next 3-4 years-ish (guessing obviously, I'm not psychic), but it might last longer. Also in that link is a PSU, which is often overlooked, but you will probably definitely need. If you want a more powerful computer, it's going to require more power (duh).

Then you're going to want to think about GPUs. GPUs always cost the most out of anything in your system, and there's a lot of fanboying going on between Nvidia and AMD. Basically, it's like this. AMD has older hardware, but it's still pretty decent and they sell it for much cheaper. NVidia has newer hardware, but you pay the premium of having the best. Some games run better on AMD, some run better on Nvidia.

My Picks -

AMD =

  • RX 460 ~$120-$140 4GB GDDR5
  • RX 480 ~$200-$250, 4-8GB GDDR5 (you can get ones with more fans and ram for more, but honestly, that's up to you)

    Nvidia =

  • GTX 750 Ti for ~$130-140
  • GeForce GTX 1060 ~$200-230, 3-6GB

MSI RX 480 4GB its at $200 with a $20 rebate available currently.

u/dnani · 3 pointsr/masseffect

Yes this card is fine. Otherwise you can go with this one and save some money. Performance-wise they're similar, you just get fewer vram (basically if you have a 1080p display you shouldn't be too worried about the vram loss). Your call, but frankly both cards are just fine
https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GAMING-RX-480-4G/dp/B01KIZUF7Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1485381383&sr=1-1&keywords=rx+480

u/XVioletStrand · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I'd spend the $50-$70 more on the 1060. But I'd try to find one with at least 4gb of VRAM. Because that pretty much the standard with most GPUs nowadays. You don't want to play a game that's heavy in details and not being able to run it because youre maxing out your cards VRAM.

Hopefully you can find one. And welcome to the community

EDIT: 4gb 1060's are rare as fuck. Well I'd still buy the part for $50-$70 more then I'd wanted.

EDIT again: why not get a amd rx480 just did a small amazon look and you can pick up this https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01KIZUF7Y/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1478330024&sr=1-2&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=amd+rx+480&dpPl=1&dpID=51LKyGJpYJL&ref=plSrch for the price range that I believe you're looking at

u/kronkifer · 2 pointsr/buildapc

If your budget allows it I'd say an rx 480. That monitor has freesync so ideally you'd want an AMD video card to take advantage of that. Amazon has the MSI Gaming X 480 4gb for $200 right now. The 8gb version would be nice but for the price that's pretty good.

Also you can check out /r/buildapcsales.

u/Aquagoat · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

The RX 480 4GB is on for $179.99 after rebate right now. So that makes that a pretty easy choice IMO.

u/destinistos · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

An RX 470 for $135? Are you sure you're not looking at an RX 460?
But anyways, GPU prices are weird right now, so it's hard to say. I honestly wouldn't get a 1050ti if you're gonna use it for more than a couple of years. I would recommend the RX 470, but right now the cheapest RX 470 is $195, and there's an RX 480 for literally $5 more on Amazon
A $200 RX 480 I'd say is a better value than a $240~ 1060.

u/Lonxu · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Not very exciting. Wasn't the MSI RX 480 4GB Gaming X already $199 ($179 after rebate) on Amazon

https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GAMING-RX-480-4G/dp/B01KIZUF7Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1478383777&sr=1-1&keywords=rx+480

Much better cooled card and should have better noise levels.

u/Kamakaziturtle · 2 pointsr/gaming

PSVR is still going to run in the $400-500 range, considering this is just a peripheral it seems like something I would hardly consider something for a large audience.

Plus, a lot of midrange PC's can already run VR, you can get VR ready GPU's in the 250 dollar range. Here's the RX480 for one example, and barely even on sale.

If you want something at an even lower entry level than PSVR, there are some bits out there allow you to use a phone as a VR headset. However theres a reason that headsets are super expensive, and that's because all of the sensors and the high resolution screen and such are very important. It's very important to trick the brain as much as possible with these systems, otherwise it causes disorientation and nausea, not fun.

u/nmcdgs · 2 pointsr/buildapc

as Chareu suggest. best suggestion IMO

>Just get a better GPU and you're set. The RX480 for example.

Now, I have a few questions.

How will I know if the cooler is going to fit and not be in the way of anything?

I can't seem to find any small cases that have the features of the larger ones (vents, top and side fans). Should I just stay with a larger case?

I need an s/pdif optical for my speakers. Should I get a pcie card or external usb?

How will I know if the video card hangs over the spare pcie slot?

Value/$, 1440p: this Fury X or this 480?

u/Bluecoregamming · 1 pointr/buildapc

If you are planning to stick on the AMD side, get a Radeon RX 480

Now if you want a GTX card go with the 1060

Those will both allow 4K gaming while not making your CPU that much of a bottle neck.

Need a 4K monitor? I have this one and couldn't be happier with it!

u/Zsomer · 1 pointr/buildapc

Or you could buy an Rx 480 for 25$ more

u/Theghost129 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

There's an unusual gap in the 300 dollar budget range, aim for the GTX 1060 3GB or RX 480 4GB if you are going to be using 1080p.

I got to buildAPCSales for good deals.

Here is an RX 480 for 180 ($20 MIR)

No real good 1060 deals right now, but I've seen them for $160.

u/Delmar_Inc · 1 pointr/buildapc

Memory usually isn't the priority since 8 Gb is enough to get you by with most things unless you plan on heavy production stuff like video editing or having more than one chrome tab open. A new graphics card will help you a ton. 1060s for if youre willing to squeeze in the extra money for performance, or stick to a 480 for a budget build. Something like this ---> https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KIZUF7Y/?tag=pcpapi-20 will give you 60 fps on most if not all games at 1080p on high settings. It all depends on what you need it for. 1050s are good cards if you're a more casual gamer. Whats your budget? What games do you plan on playing? Also, whats the wattage of your power supply? (might not be relevant but good to know just in case)

u/EmperorDOGE11 · 1 pointr/buildapc

Okay, so I'm debating between 1060 3gb and 480 4gb.

I will 100% get 480 4gb, if I am able to use this:

https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GAMING-RX-480-4G/dp/B01KIZUF7Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1479660658&sr=8-2&keywords=msi+gaming+x+480

It has "crossfire" in it, so what I understand is that if I was to use the graphics card I would need to have a crossfire, which as I understand is two graphics cards.

Am I able to use it without having to have a "crossfire"?

And secondly, my friend told me that if I wanted to get a AMD card, I had to have some other thing, (I've only seen a picture) which has like 6 wires coming out of it, and it costs about 40 dollars.

u/Bayjack · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I'm thinking about upgrading to a new Gpu. My current Gpu is Gtx 770 and I've found two different gpus on sale, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KIZUF7Y/ref=twister_B01KKKAS9W?_encoding=UTF8&th=1this one or https://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16814127963&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=EXPRESS111916&cm_mmc=EMC-EXPRESS111916-_-EMC-111916-Index-_-DesktopGraphicsCards-_-14127963-S0B or this one. I've compared them on gpuboss.com but since I don't know a whole lot about gpus, I thought maybe some of you redditors could help me

u/roge102 · 1 pointr/buildapc

Is this the 480 you're referring too?

I can definitely pick this up and the resolution on my monitor is at 1080p.

u/kainoasmith · 1 pointr/buildapc

get an RX 480, it's very very slightly better than the 1060 3gb for 200 euros

Something is definitely off. Try setting the power target to +50%, but just know that the card is not a 100W TDP card, you maybe only plugged in one power connector to the card.
Just to make sure, your card is this one, right? Link if so, this card has two power connectors, make sure they're both plugged in properly.

the Asus:

http://www.amazon.in/Dual-Fan-Radeon-Gaming-Graphics-DUAL-RX480-O4G/dp/B01KWGSEJU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1486401826&sr=8-1&keywords=rx+480+4gb

The MSI:

http://www.amazon.in/dp/B01KIZUF7Y/ref=twister_B01LZ70R7L

I was leaning towards the Asus because it does not have a 8gb variant, making me feel like it was a card designed for Rx 480 4gb. The MSI 8gb variant is very popular, and I can't find reviews of the 4gb variant at all, since most would naturally focus on the 8gb.

u/machinehead933 · 1 pointr/buildapc

The cheaper card is a reference model with a blower style cooler. The performance won't be much different, but it will run hotter and louder than the 2nd card. Also the 2nd card will have higher clocks out of the box than the reference model.

If you're OK with dropping to a 4G model instead of 8G, you can get a 480 for $200:

Gigabyte 4G 480, MSI 4G 480

u/Hydraxous · 1 pointr/Overwatch

Rx 480 works Great and it is pretty cheap if you want around 80-100 fps.

If you want consistent 120+ fps go for a GTX 1070 or higher
