To keep portability in mind, I'd recommend either the MSI GS65 Stealth Thin or Gigabyte Aero 15W, both of which are thin and light gaming devices that will be able to run the games you listed. Both have the 6-core i7 processor and GTX 1060 graphics card. It will perform in the games you listed very well. Display is a 144Hz on both.

Since you're open to expanding to $2,200, you can get the upgraded models: the other MSI GS65 Stealth Thin and Gigabyte Aero 15X.

I'm assuming the screen will be at most 1080p or at least 1366x768.

The things to look for are; an SSD, minimum of a 1050 Ti, minimum of 8GB of memory (16GB recommended but DDR4 is very expensive), and the CPU with the best single-threaded performance (IPC) you can afford.

Nothing else about the laptop matters, but with your budget you won't have an issue getting what you need to run it.

I don't know much about buying laptops in Australia, but this would run it quite well and is min/maxed better compared to the others if your max budget really is 2k and isn't flexible at all.

If you're able to go to $2100 then this would be excellent

I would recommend MSI GS65 as it comes with: -

CPU: i7-8750H which is great for rendering videos and 3d work as it offers up to 50 % more performance than the past generation processors

GPU: GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q

RAM: 8 GB

Display: FHD 15.6 IPS screen

Storage: 256GB SSD,- HDD

I/O : 3X [USB 3.1] (Gen 2), 1X[Thunderbolt 3], Mini Display, HDMI, ethernet and Sd card reader.

Poor battery life

It is a great choice because of its great heat management system and high build quality, along with its specifications makes it the best option for your usage and it is within your budget.

you prefer a traditional laptop, I would recommend this [MSI GS65] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BBJKCYG/?tag=bkadamos_alltest-20) because it comes with everything you need, 8th generation, i7 hexa core CPU which is one of the best in the market and great for your usage, 16GB of ram for smooth multitasking, good SSD storage of 256GB for faster boot up and loading, 15.6 inch Full HD IPS 144Hz screen which is a must have for this price range, high build quality, long battery life, GeForce GTX 1070 GPU that should be able to handle games on medium to high settings with very good FPs, lightweight, and it’s within your budget.

If you prefer 2 in 1, I would recommend this [Microsoft Surface Book 2] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076J8H9PF/?tag=bkadamos_alltest-20) because it comes with everything you need, 8th generation, i7 quad core CPU which is one of the best in the market and great for your usage, 16GB of ram for smooth multitasking, good SSD storage of 512GB for faster boot up and loading, 13.5 inch Full HD IPS touch screen which is a must have for this price range, high build quality, GeForce GTX 1050 GPU that should be able to handle games on medium to high settings with very good FPs, backlit keyboard, supports pen, and it’s within your budget.

For school, I would recommend nothing bigger than 15.6 inches .

One of my favorite systems for college students who want portability, a decent enough battery life and of course, gaming performance is this MSI GS65 Stealth, but it tops your budget and only comes with a 256 GB SSD.. External hard drives are fine once you are willing to carry it around with you- you don't see much of a difference when accessing certain data from an external drive. This ASUS ROG Zephyrus S is also decent, but it has a weaker graphics card than the MSI stealth above in the ( maxq version o the GTX 1070).. If I were looking for a laptop though and am not concerned about weight, this MSI GE63 Raider RGB-010 would be a good contender but as I have said before... I really like the MSI Stealth.

Okay then what does it mean when they say IPS and such? What kind of monitor is best (LED / etc.)? What resolution?

Is this a good laptop? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BBJKCYG/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

And by low profile I understand the fan thing, I just meant in terms of design for the unit itself. But that's not a huge deal.

I’m looking at the MSI GS65 Stealth laptop. The Best Buy version is $1999 and the closest Amazon version is $2099. The only difference I can see is that the cheaper Best Buy version has twice the SSD storage (512 vs. 256). What’s the catch? What am I missing that the Amazon one has over the Best Buy one?

Have you looked at the MSI GS65 Stealth-Thin?

u/Vladz0r · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I would add the MSI GS65 Stealth as a competitor with the latest Gigabyte Aero 15X. It's got comparable specs and battery life, but you'll have less of a hassle with warranty with the MSI, so I'm leaning towards it as my higher end pick.
