I had the same issue - was greatly improved by a natural medicine Dr. who immediately took me off the PPI's and agreed that they can make things worse. He treated me with enteric coated oregano & peppermint oil. I know you're supposed to avoid peppermint and I was skeptical - but I took [these pills] (https://www.amazon.com/Natural-Factors-Peppermint-Gastrointestinal-Softgels/dp/B000RGDVDA) for 3 months and then a probiotic. I still have GERD but probably with about 25% frequency and severity. But the lump in chest / throat & burping are just so much better. I have a bag full of medicines I had tried for this from UK Gaviscon to Sulcrate and only oregano and peppermint oil helped. This is just my story - not giving medical advice :)
Have you tried ingesting oregano oil? It has been incredible for restoring my BMs and is my main 'medication' for achieving remission.
