These are what I use. It's not really a trick, but they definitely help me fall asleep during the week so I'm not up until midnight or 1 am.
I'm exactly like you. The lack of sleep is my main issue. These 2 have worked very well for me and I used to take Ambien a few months back.

I take 2 of each before I go to bed and when I wake up (1 of each). Does not make me groggy. Good luck!
I would second cutting back on drinking - that's one of the only things that's really helped me sleep better. But for what it's worth, it took a while (like 2 months?) for me to really feel a difference there.
I used to take these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0026KLHEU supplements that are a combo of melatonin, chamomile and some other herbs. They worked so well for about 6 months (for a little while I took one every night, then just a few times a week), but lately they have been making me feel miserable in the morning even when I get the sleep cycle timing right and get plenty of sleep.
Friends of mine that are in medical school have been talking about magnesium a lot lately, so I'm going to try that one next but am interested to see what works for other people too!
