You can pretty much lather with anything from an onion soup bowl to even a coffee mug. It's all about what works well for you.
Actually it's the other way around. Stone/earthenware is an excellent tool for dispersing heat evenly. It's why people cook pizzas in brick ovens and on pizza stones. It's the same as a ceramic baking dish (or say, French onion soup crocks), which are quite common.
