Quite long but please read:

As some who tried to make a homegrown a gaming website, let me go over why I think I failed to grab an audience in India. I'll divide it into 2 sections the first section is about gaming in India generally, the second is my own personal mistakes and possible fixes if I can think of any. Do note that this is a rant and probably an ad.

Forgive me for any mistakes since it is past 2 A.M. and I should probably sleep.

Section 1, Gaming in India:

  1. View of gaming: As u/Hashirama_the_1st already said, gaming is not mainlined in India. Very few of the last generation see gaming as viable so they force their children, who are the current generation to give it up and "Grow Up".
  2. Software Costs: Gamers in India don't really have money to spend especially since some big companies have stopped regional pricing. This forces them to only buy what their friends are playing so that they have someone to play with. u/equinoxdark already mentioned this and he is right, if I told everyone here to pick 10 games they would probably be able to list all the games their friends from India are playing this month to a very high accuracy.
  3. Hardware costs: Hardware isn't cheap here, GST on computer components is 18%, thankfully (from what I have read) that applies to peripherals and consoles too. The problem comes in with greedy importers who overcharge, an example is the price of the Nintendo 2DS XL here which is double what I paid 2 years ago in the USA. If you want to test multiple hardware combinations properly, you are going to break the bank.
  4. Mobile is king: Very few of the installed gamer base in India is non-mobile. Think about it, I'm sure all of us know more people who play something on mobile phones than on any kind of dedicated gaming system (PC included).
  5. Gameplay vs Graphics: My observation tells me that people who buy games here don't want good gameplay, they want graphics. This is a sad state since a good gameplay loop will lose to a game as dull as The Order 1886 (Thanks Zero Punctuation)
  6. Funds: If someone finds an investor to fund a gaming site let me know. Funds are needed to: pay writers, pay editors, pay the overcharging marketing people, pay domain costs, pay hosting etc.

Considering the above, this is where I went wrong:

  • Too normal: My site uses a very static review format which is the standard intro, text, score format. I need to break that up and find some way to be unique. I'm contemplating removing the score for a start and just putting pros and cons.
  • No bandwidth: Courtesy BSNL it takes me 10 hours to upload a 1GB gameplay video for the reviews which isn't fun. Especially when I have work to upload as well. While I would like to upgrade, BSNL and everyone else doesn't have anything better in my area. The second this changes I'm upgrading
  • No voice-over for videos: I can't do voice overs since my voice is BS and I can't afford or find a good voice who is into video games. This would enable us to get into both video and written reviews since video reviews on YouTube do tons better. Related to point 1.6. Can't fix it for now but I have written a couple of scripts for the voice over.
  • No care for Launch time: I want to review games both old and new. Most people want to be told that their pre order was correct but I will probably go and review a 10-year-old game instead of the hot new release. I can probably change this for regionally priced games.
  • Writing style: I've been told my writing style is a little too highbrow and the critics are probably right. I need to drop it down a bit.
  • Geekiness: Being a game dev to some extent I get lost in the philosophy of good gameplay loops and I want to talk about them. This alienates people who don't care, India or otherwise. I want to talk about old games (and emulation) more and that doesn't attract attention. I'll probably make a separate section to talk about this.
  • Snobbishness: My head is firmly stuck up my arse. I'm a snob addicted to indies because I find myself spending more time with them because of how quickly I can enjoy them while AAA titles make you go through a boring cinematic to have boring and seen before game-play. I can't appreciate Call of Duty and Battlefield for this reason. I can't fix this :(
  • Funds: I don't have any. I taught myself SEO and web marketing to an extent to skip the marketing people who are the biggest hit I'll take cost-wise but it seems I can't skip them completely. I asked people to consider writing for us for free (including some from this sub) and I would put their name and contact details on the site so they could use it as a proof of sort but anyone who said they would write, did not. I would like to be able to pay the writers.

If anyone wants to write for us please ping me. At our height we had 3000 readers (mostly from European countries) and I would like to get back to that number. If you want to cover any of my weaknesses please feel free, it's your score and your review and I will not overwrite you, just remember that I can't pay you much right now.

Not sure what you mean? It's absolutely available on coupang.

Though if you don't speak Korean, you will have to hack it. They are region locked.

I recommend it from Amazon. It is bellow 200 USD so no import fees.

PM'd you the image.

Also I'm not sure that the usual system transfer would work because the 2DS is totally dead (won't even turn on) but I was reading that a Nintendo rep could do the network ID transfer in such cases. Between that and the replacement unit I'll probably be back to playing in a week or so.

Thanks for your help! And if you ever figure out where the serial number comes from, please let me know. I'm rather fond of mysteries.

Edit: okay, this is fun. I looked again today and the link I provided a few posts back no longer directs to the same place. It's now the more generic "from multiple sellers" page, without the usual larger-font price quote on the right side and the "buy new" and "buy used" option below (like you see on the mario kart 7 bundle version).

Also the Worldwide Distributors seller appears to no longer offer the black and turquoise version, although I've found them selling others like the white and orange
