I purchased one a couple months back. Tabletop mode is definitely included as it is compatible with joycons and all controllers the regular switch is compatible with. Handheld works the same.
I ended up trading mine in and paying the difference for a regular switch because I realized the desire to play on my monitor was outweighing the convenience of the portability. But YMMV, that was just me.
It's a good system just remember that it is completely incompatible with TV mode at all as it lacks the hardware to output video. The only game I can think off the top of my head that is out of the box incompatible with switch lite handheld mode is Super Mario Party. But all you need really is a pro controller or joycons or some sort of external controller, hope this helps.
PS. if you wish to play it in tabletop mode, absolutely buy a stand for it, I recommend HORIs USB stand

Well the Switch Lite Dock wouldn’t be as pricey as a regular Switch dock. This is what I was thinking.

So that’s just $30, not $80-ish. Or geeze maybe the regular Dock is infinity dollars... I’m perplexed I can’t seem to find standalone Switch docks in Target.com or Bestbuy.com... and it’s like $120 on Amazon...wtf
Anyway, a Lite-oriented dock/stand would be cheaper. However, you’re correct that you’d be using quite a bit of kit to get this all working, and then you’d have to still make sure you’re sitting pretty close to the screen. Video out to a larger display isn’t an option so you’d have to put your face within 2-3 feet or so.
I use this charging stand for my Switch Lite. It works well and services it purpose.
