Fascenating! Although I'd say those were not really "big" waves, note their lack of impact as soon as a decade after each wave of them. In the 1970s before I went to college I lived through the tail end of the US post-WWII craze, and in my investigations of the phenomena, those earlier sightings didn't come up, although I didn't have to do much research to conclude there wasn't anything to it.

But I gather UFOs were a bigger thing in Japan for longer, e.g. see the strong theme of them in Kimagure Orange Road in 1984-8 (granted, there's a plot significant reason to give them much more credibility than normal). And Nissin UFO Instant Yakisoba is still a thing. Ah, and who named US developed claw crane games "UFO catchers"?
